The #legislation to fund the #State Dept & other #ForeignAid programs alone provides over $19B more than Trump’s request — though it would constitute a cut of $9B below current levels.
The #USAGM, the parent broadcaster that includes #VoiceOfAmerica, which the #Trump admin has sought to dismantle, is set to receive about $653M. That is half a billion more than what #Trump requested to “support the orderly shutdown” of the agency. Lawmakers previously provided $867M to the broadcaster.

#KariLake, the close #Trump ally & snr *adviser* to #USAGM, urged #Congress on Wednesday to gut the #VoiceOfAmerica & other federally funded #news orgs she *oversees*, as lawmakers of both parties expressed concern.
In a hearing that grew testy at times, Lake defended proposed cuts to the #global news orgs, while #Democrats & some #Republicans warned that they could make it impossible for the #US to disseminate #information to countries w/limited press freedoms, such as #Iran, #China & #Russia.

Just 250 staff remain at Voice of America, after layoffs announced today by Kari Lake, special advisor to the United States Agency for Global Media (USAGM). Lake says 1,400 positions have been eliminated across USAGM, an 85% decrease. When President Trump signed an order in March to shrink USAGM, advocates for the agency, including Republican lawmakers, said its networks were vital for fighting disinformation. The three VOA journalists who sued to stop the terminations were all laid off, but say their legal fight will continue. Here's more from CNN.

The admin laid off hundreds of contract employees & put permanent workers on indefinite leave, citing a Mar 14 #ExecutiveOrder from #Trump.
Last month, US Dist Court Snr Judge Royce C. Lamberth ordered #KariLake & #VoiceOfAmerica's federal parent, the #USAGM, to bring back workers & get the network up & running, as #Congress intended through #law. He also ruled that the admin had to restore #RadioFreeAsia & #MiddleEastBroadcastingNetworks, calling their dismemberment "arbitrary & capricious."

#KariLake, a senior adviser at #USAGM [& crackpot], which oversees #VoiceOfAmerica, said that the #Trump admin had acted within its #legal authority [it didn’t & she wouldn’t know anyway given her *concept* of the #law].
“We are in the process of rightsizing the agency & reducing the federal bureaucracy to meet administration priorities,” Lake…said in a statement.
She added: “Buckle up. There’s more to come.”

“VOA is not to be the voice of left America nor the voice of right America,” said Steve Herman @w7voa, chief national correspondent for #VOA.
“#USAGM cannot dictate [that] VOA run OAN content. It would be a violation of our fire wall & our charter, which are #laws,” he said.
