  12. @jeroenbosman Well, #Unpaywall used to do this in the sense that they linked DOAJ and stated the first OA date (separately for repository copy and publisher copy), but recently they've been removing some of these features.

  14. It took ten years, but HAL has started implementing a part of it (ccsd.cnrs.fr/en/2023/12/hal-s- ). Unlike @pintoch (antonin.delpeuch.eu/posts/retr ), I consider this a success for Dissemin.

But we need more. Every repository should do it, but given the effort it's more realistically done by consortial, national or international bodies. Some parts of the service, like #OpenAlex / #Unpaywall and #InternetArchiveScholar, are so expensive we can probably afford just one to be shared by all global users.

  19. @ethanwhite @OpenAlex Thanks for your work. Great to hear that OurResearch is, quote, "We're a lean, hustling, resilient nonprofit. After 10yrs, we're now 100% self-sustaining via earned revenue."

  23. @RationalWiki

    Thanks!

Handy to know for keen senses of curiosity: thanks to #unpaywall's handy API our weekly listing includes #OpenAccess links as available (such as to accepted revisions etc.) even when the journal itself is practicing the relatively novel ransomware approach.

Unpaywall also provides nifty plugins for Chrome and Firefox. Coverage is immense. Our stats find some 60-70% of articles free to read by one means or another-- all perfectly legal.

  25. It's irritating that #pubmed sends out #RSS announcements when the #DOI is not ready yet.

I'm not even sure how to access it just now since it is paywalled and that I usually get those thru either my library's DOI resolution, #Scholar or #unpaywall -- which doesn't link to the #preprint (yet?)

#GoogleScholar on the title does link to preprint, so if you read because you're interested in the #paper and not in my rant, here it is: doi.org/10.1101/2023.12.07.570

  27. @pintoch

I seem to remember that I made your code available to either #oabutton or #unpaywall – with your consent, of course. I am not sure if they ended up using it in their system though.

  28. @nichtich @christian @zaesa yes, we had something like this (for papers, not for research data though)! The successor was not the open access button, but rather #oadoi (oadoi.org), which used to do exactly what you describe, for research papers. Now that redirects to #unpaywall, which might also work on research data (but beware, last time I checked they send all your browsing history to their web service).

  30. At the end of last year, I was looking into the #Unpaywall status of articles that are openly available because their embargo has expired. Unpaywall classifies these as Hybrid, but I think it should instead be Bronze. The articles weren't open at the time of publication, which is Unpaywall's own criteria for Hybrid.

I wrote a short post about my approaches to detecting these and the implications at doi.org/10.31274/b8136f97.45a4 .

  33. "Medieval Feminist Forum" sounds like a cool #OpenAccess journal!
    scholarworks.wmich.edu/mff/abo

But sigh: ir.uiowa.edu switched to some #ExLibris product and removed the journal archive, all incoming links were broken with no redirects in place, #DOAJ and #Unpaywall know nothing about it, BASE doesn't have the new OAI-PMH endpoint.

I bet the repository admins are crying in their sleep. Sometimes working in #libraries is frustrating.

    So, #InternetArchive to the rescue:

  35. #France institutional repository of #scientificPublications @hal_fr has announced that it will now allow to collect automatically #openAccess version of papers they list.
This involves #openAlex data and then locating potential files via #unpaywall .

Note for those in France: they're willing to have people test this, notably those who have open access papers not yet in their base.

  39. @petrichor A simple option would be to have a browser extension like #Unpaywall preinstalled by default on every university-provided computer. Then gradually add features like this informative/advertising banner you thought of.

  41. @MsPhelps It might also help to exclude bronze OA from the comparisons, because #Unpaywall detection has degraded in the past year or so (possibly because PDFs are increasingly inaccessible, hidden behind multiple walls of technical measures such as captchas and whatnot).

The French #OpenScience barometer seems to point to a decrease in retrospective deposits in the past couple years.

  43. @eloquence This is a very difficult problem to solve, though. #Unpaywall has built an entire business on identifying the access status of DOIs and there's still a significant error rate in the identification of bronze #OpenAccess (gratis, not libre).
