@nichtich @christian @zaesa yes, we had something like this (for papers, not for research data though)! The successor was not the open access button, but rather #oadoi (oadoi.org), which used to do exactly what you describe, for research papers. Now that redirects to #unpaywall, which might also work on research data (but beware, last time I checked they send all your browsing history to their web service).
