Four Linux installs later, I have finally upgraded from Ubuntu 20.04LTS to Ubuntu 26.04LTS. Tried Ubuntu Unity 24.04, vanilla Debian13 and Debian13+KDE first. Each had some kind of showstopper, but I'm glad to have tried them. I'm a pretty conservative user; I just want a reliable daily driver.

Ubuntu 20.04 LTS enters ESM
Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Focal Fossa was released on April 23rd, 2020, to give you an improved desktop experience. Since then, newer versions of Ubuntu, including Ubuntu 25.04 Plucky Puffin, were released to further improve the desktop environment and to enhance user experience.
We are sad to announce that Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Focal Fossa has reached the end of standard support, which means that there will be no more package updates to be accepted to the main Ubuntu 20.04 package archives. This happened as of May 29th, 2025, when it was announced a month ago that this was the final date.
Canonical has started the Extended Security Maintenance (ESM) program for Ubuntu 20.04 Focal Fossa by extending the support date for security updates up to April 2030, further enhanced with the legacy support that spans two more years, which means April 2032. You can check the release cycle here.
In order to benefit from extra 5 years of security maintenance support, you’ll have to have a Ubuntu Pro subscription tied to your Ubuntu One account that your computer uses.
