But I bet you'll find the pulley lines up fine with the treadle wheel, and the base will either fit or nearly fit the treadle base. Those series universal motors are crap, anyway.

Hahahahaha got the treadle working again! They had spray painted it all and locked the joints in place. Unbolted and rebolted things, reinforced the frame with some scrap wood, attached to the table, and lubricated with TriFlow lubricant (which has Teflon in it). Worked it until it started moving. Now to drill holes in the table and get another belt or two. #humanpower #treadle

Oh look, here's a helpful lady describing how this works. I apparently have been attempting to drive this treadle sewing machine much like my first attempt to learn manual shifting a car, LOL... 🤪

(apparently the trick is to start it with your hand on the crank first, then take up the momentum with the foot pedal. I was randomly cranking down on the foot pedal and it would just go one way or the other without any distinction).

Biggest issue (which is absolutely user issue, not a machine issue I am sure): how they heck do you get a treadle machine to start in the right direction? It seems there much be some technique to getting it to go forward. Also, speed control is... unclear to me (ie how you slow things down...). Once I finally get it going in the right direction... my control ability is near zero, ha ha ha. There's some serious additional technique needed to run a treadle, I can see.

Our workhorse sewing machine is an institutional Singer from the 1960s retrofitted into a random treadle base. The rationale is that the treadle gives better low speed/torque control.
The retrofit was surprisingly easy-- evidently the cast iron base plates were nearly standardized.
