  4. 🚂✨ Forget history classes! Discover ancient Roman ruins while you wait for your train at Tower Hill. Just remember to squint and pretend those "chunky irregular blocks" are remnants of Caesar's summer house. 🏛️👀

  5. Over the last few days I have been sharing about the landscape of western Victoria which is covered with volcanos, some of which erupted comparatively recently, as little as 10,000 years ago. The Atherton Tablelands in Far North Queensland also has quite a few volcanos of a similar age.

The eruptions of both the western Victorian and Far North Queensland volcanos have been remembered by the Aboriginal peoples of the respective regions. They have carefully passed on this history in their oral storytelling traditions for thousands of years.

Today the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Commission) has published some of these indigenous histories. Read these stories about the creation of landscape that includes the stories about the volcanos: abc.net.au/news/deeptime/topic

  10. Have a close look at this photo. Can you see the koala in the tree?

  11. Where there are animals, there is poo. This is emu poo. Note the red berry-like things in the poo. Emus are really important dispersers of seeds through their poo.

Unfortunately there are also a lot of weeds on Tower Hill. Birds generally can help disperse seeds of weeds. Weed seeds can also disperse through animal fur as well as wind etc.

The yellow daisy-like flower next to the poo is one of the types of weeds in the area. It is not native.

  12. There were emus. Unfortunately these emus are not afraid of cars. I saw them go right up to a car.

I am very wary of emus because they can be aggressive. These were OK, but I used the zoom to capture these photos.

  17. I was disappointed the information centre was not open. The building was designed by Robin Boyd - a famous mid-twentieth century Australian architect. There was a sign proclaiming that it was being renovated and would re-open in 2023, but it was closed. Looking through the windows showed it was completely empty inside.

  22. You should definitely try to visit Tower Hill if you are in the Warrnambool area. There is a short circuit drive that meant my elderly mother could enjoy the scenes.

  27. We visited Tower Hill, near Warrnambool for a drive this afternoon. It is the site of a volcano that last exploded about 35,000 years ago.
