Over the last few days I have been sharing about the landscape of western Victoria which is covered with volcanos, some of which erupted comparatively recently, as little as 10,000 years ago. The Atherton Tablelands in Far North Queensland also has quite a few volcanos of a similar age.
The eruptions of both the western Victorian and Far North Queensland volcanos have been remembered by the Aboriginal peoples of the respective regions. They have carefully passed on this history in their oral storytelling traditions for thousands of years.

I was disappointed the information centre was not open. The building was designed by Robin Boyd - a famous mid-twentieth century Australian architect. There was a sign proclaiming that it was being renovated and would re-open in 2023, but it was closed. Looking through the windows showed it was completely empty inside.

You should definitely try to visit Tower Hill if you are in the Warrnambool area. There is a short circuit drive that meant my elderly mother could enjoy the scenes.

Today in Warrnambool we visited the Fletcher Jones Antiques Markets. They are in the old Fletcher Jones clothing factory. It is huge. There are two floors of old metal signs, furniture, china, clothes, books etc etc.

Next week I am taking my elderly mother for a holiday to Camperdown and Warrnambool to visit family and give her some R&R after a rough 6 months during which she had to endure 3 operations.
I think we will also stop by Timboon. I know she is going to want to see the ocean crashing along the coast so we will probably do a bit of the Great Ocean Road too.

Heute waren wir den ersten Tag auf der Great Ocean Road unterwegs. Die Tagesetappe führte uns von Warrnambool nach Apollo Bay.
Die Great Ocean Road ist eine Küstenstraße im Südosten des australischen Kontinents. Sie führt über eine Strecke von 240 km von Torquay nach Allansford. Wir fahren die Straße also im Prinzip in der „falschen“ Richtung. Das erweist sich für uns aber als gar nicht so schlecht. Zum Einen passt die Strecke so wesentlich besser in unsere Reiseroute, zum Anderen – und das haben wir heute festgestellt – hat die umgekehrte Richtung auch den Vorteil, dass wir an manchen Punkten nahezu allein sind, weil wir eben nicht mit dem großen Strom schwimmen.

Schon am ersten Stopp sind wir überwältigt von dem Bild, das sich uns bietet. Die Naturgewalt des Ozeans, dessen Wellen von der Antarktis aus Anlauf nehmen können und dann ungehindert auf die Küste prallen ist schon beeindruckend. Dazu war es heute auch relativ windig und der Wind kam zudem vom offenen Meer her, sodass beachtliche Wellenhöhen erreicht wurden.

Wie der Name vermuten lässt: Eine Höhle im Felsen, in der ein flaches Becken einen Pool bildet.
London Bridge
Hier bildet ein markanter Felsen eine Brücke. Diese Brücke war bis vor nicht allzu langer Zeit noch mit den danebenliegenden Felsen über einen zweiten Bogen verbunden. Dieser zweite Bogen ist jedoch eingestürzt, sodass die Brücke nun allein steht.

Loch Ard Gorge
Hier handelt es sich um eine enge Schlucht, die das Meer ins Ufer geschnitten hat.
Am 01.06.1878 lief hier vor der Küste das Segelschiff Loch Ard, das von Gravesend in England auf dem Weg nach Melbourne war, im dichten Nebel auf ein Riff. Von den 54 Personen an Bord überlebten nur zwei. Die einzigen beiden Überlebenden des Schiffbruchs waren Eva Carmichael, die sich fünf Stunden lang an einen Holm klammerte, und Thomas Pearce, ein Lehrling, der sich an den umgedrehten Rumpf eines Rettungsbootes klammerte. Pearce wurde an dieser Stelle zuerst an Land gespült, hörte dann Carmichaels Schreie und lief zurück ins Meer, um sie zu retten.

Auf den beiden letzten Bildern lässt sich an der Differenz der Wasserstände im Bogen erkennen, wie hoch die Wellen tatsächlich waren.

Auch hier kann man wieder über Treppen zum Strand absteigen.

Hier handelt es sich zweifellos um den bekannteste Punkt an der Great Ocean Road. Außerdem gibt es hier ein Informationszentrum, das wir aber gar nicht besucht haben. Von der nebenan liegenden Wiese aus werden sogar Hubschrauberflüge entlang der Küste angeboten. Damit ist dieser Aussichtspunkt – womit durchaus zu rechnen war – sehr touristisch überlaufen. Während sich das Besucheraufkommen an den übrigen Stellen durchaus in Grenzen hielt, werden hier insbesondere fernöstliche Reisegruppen busladungsweise in die Landschaft gekippt.
Die Felsformationen, die hier zu sehen sind, haben mich auch nicht sonderlich beeindruckt. Wie ich bereits geschrieben habe: es gab Stellen, die ich imposanter fand.
Auf dem Weg zu unserem Hotel in Apollo Bay wollen wir uns dann noch Cape Otway Lighthouse ansehen. Der Küstenabschnitt hier im Südosten des Kontinents ist auch als „Shipwreck Coast“ – die Küste der Schiffsunglücke bekannt. Die Navigation in diesen Gewässern war insbesondere zur Zeit der Kolonialisierung schwierig, da es hier viele der Küste vorgelagerte Riffe gibt. Außerdem tritt hier – insbesondere in den (australischen) Wintermonaten – häufig plötzlicher Nebel auf. Daher hat es in diesem Küstenabschnitt tatsächlich eine erhebliche Zahl von Schiffsunglücken gegeben.
Aus diesem Grund wurde Im Jahre 1848 in 90 Metern Höhe über dem Meer auf dem Cape Otway der heute älteste Leuchtturm auf dem australischen Festland errichtet.
Auf der Webseite ist durchaus erwähnt, dass der Leuchtturm selbst zurzeit wegen Schäden in der Statik des Gebäudes, die infolge eines Erdbebens entstanden sind, nicht bestiegen werden kann. Und es ist auch erwähnt, dass die Öffnungszeit um 16:00 Uhr endet. Dass dann aber das weitläufig eingezäunte Gelände auch abgeschlossen wird und man sich nicht einmal mehr den Leuchtturm von außen ansehen kann, wird nirgends erwähnt.
Es kam, wie es kommen musste: Wir kamen Punkt 16:00 Uhr auf dem Parkplatz an und sahen gerade noch, wie eine Angestellte das Tor zum Gelände verschloss. Für uns war das äußerst ärgerlich, da wir nicht damit gerechnet hatten.
Die einzige Möglichkeit für uns, wenigstens noch einen Blick auf den Leuchtturm zu werfen war ein Fußmarsch auf dem Klippenrandweg zu einer Stelle, an der man den Leuchtturm aus einer Entfernung von ca. 500 Metern sehen kann.
