Honestly, I don't have strong opinions on #localgovt, but the hypocrisy of acting like #ThreeWaters was an imminent threat to democracy, then forcing their own agenda on councils is making me crazy.

When the Luxon government lobbed all of the government's Three Waters costs onto Councils, I'm sure even ardent Nat fanbois didn't expect reality to hit this hard.
In Waitaki the Council has approved a plan to increase water charges by 90% over two years from $1352 to $2566. That's water only... it doesn't include rates.
Queenstown Lakes has signed off on rises which will take the current average $1,500 water bill to $4,889 over eight years.
That is unsustainable for many people. It's never been more expensive to live alone.

The NatACT government's Fast Track legislation takes final decisions over resource management consents away from regional councils, and hands them to government ministers. Think Big 2.0?
I look forward to strong non-partisan resistance from all the people who supposedly objected to Three Waters not because it was Labour policy, but because they thought it gave central government too much control over what were rightly local decisions.

This is being driven by a government-mandated "cloud first policy", despite the fact that as well as reducing control over services and data, putting servers in the "cloud" almost always ends up being more expensive than any other way of hosting servers.

The Three Waters governance structure was spun as giving Mana Whenua 50% of the power. But if the water entity boards can't make decisions without at least 75% support, it's really only giving them 50% of the workload.

The NatACTs have an ulterior motive when it comes to water reform. If councils could afford to maintain water infrastructure properly, at least some of them would have. Even the big cities are struggling, with massive budgets relative to the smaller District Councils. So as Gordon Campbell pointed out months ago the most likely consequence of doing nothing and expecting more (NatACT plan in a nutshell) is crisis and privatization.

You'd think with all the flooding in the North Island the priority would be to push 3 waters quicker to organize our storm water system on a national level to try and get infrastructure builds underway to minimize the impact of said event's, because let's face it all across NZ local councils are hopeless.
But no instead they want to stay the course of fuck ups.

- only $75 million capex
- $582 million in opex
- how does it compare to now?
- is it a typical Govt business case underestimate?
- unclear in scope. Does it include the telemetry and SCADA systems supporting the infrastructure?

Easy to digest #threewaters breakdown. Still won't matter to those on the right who just want to be tossers for the sake of it. Also, clear insight into why #nzlabour is no longer the workers party of old and finds itself regularly infighting, oftentimes bitter.
