Who remembers the Silverlight Film studio planned for Wanaka? It was a massive project offering ten sound stages, workshops, production offices, a film school, screening theatres, post-production facilities, back lots replicating international film locations (New York, Venice, European Cities etc), a lake, a medieval village, a banquet hall, a lake village and a replica of New York's Central Park.
The project received fast-track approval in December 2021.
I don't know why the Silverlight project failed, but it always seemed far too ambitious in scale. Now developers propose to transform the site with 240 visitor accommodation units, workers’ accommodation, two 18-hole golf courses, a driving range, a hospitality precinct and a hotel.
Because the world doesn't have enough golf courses.

Another day, another fast-track project which would normally have failed most environmental and planning laws has been rubber-stamped by the Luxon government's 'experts'.
This time it's the "Ayrburn Screen Hub" which will be plonked in Dalefield... one of the wealthiest parts of the Wakatipu.
On the surface it's a film hub and the financial viability of studios is always a dodgy one. However friends of friends who work for Winton have let slip that what they're really getting away with is building a 200 bed hotel in Dalefield.
Fast-track: producing results for donors which would otherwise have failed every test.
The only positive to this decision is the way it's pissing off the development's true blue, ultra-wealthy Speargrass Flat neighbours. This is what you get for supporting National & Act. Nya nya nya!

On Monday Santana Minerals’ Bendigo-Ophir Gold Project was accepted for the Fast Track process. Apart from scarring the landscape, Santana's mining activity will release toxic elements into the environment including arsenic & lead. The mine will consume up to 9.5 million litres of water per day.
To stymie criticism, and taking advantage of the stupidly short time frame of National's fast-track process, Santana did a 10,000 page document dump at the last moment, overloading objectors.
And if that's not bad enough, Santana now wants to exclude residents, expert locals and community groups such as Sustainable Tarras from having any say in the process.
The Luxon government may only last for three years, but the damage they're doing to our environment will last for generations.

Shane Jones is having a bender.
Yesterday the Greens announced that seven extractive projects relying on National's fast-track to bypass environmental concerns would be cancelled under a change in government.
While overseas mining companies like Santana pay a pittance in royalties, Jones colourfully claims Otago's economy would be "disembowelled" by the move.
In reality Santana's Bendigo-Ophir project is still on the drawing board and it's cancellation will cost zero local jobs. There will be no economic disembowelment, despite what the fevered Jones may claim.
Prioritising the financial interests of multinationals over our environment was always a dumb move from the coalition.
It's just one year until the next election. May the Luxon government's foul perversion of democracy be short-lived.

Contact Energy applied under fast track legislation to be able to reduce Lake Hawea's water levels by as much as 8m. When they felt like it.
Locals were up in arms and farmers joined the protest. It was always a bizarre concept and the government has just rejected the proposal.
If Contact were to build the solar farms they already have consented, they wouldn't need to try it on with this sort of nonsense.
