  5. How's this for not being able to read the room?

Queenstown real estate agent Donna Hewitt posted a promotional AI image on Instagram, depicting herself as a warrior taking part in Trump's illegal war in Iran.

    How stupidly crass.

What's her target market? American MAGAs with $5-10 mill to buy a NZ passport?

If you live in Queenstown, maybe consider giving Connect Realty a hard miss.

  7. CW: Another Queenstown gondola - with no traces of Rod Drury

Jeez. Now another QT gondola project has also been accepted for fast-track, on its *third* attempt. But this time it's swapped its proposed funicular railway lines for "aerial ropeways".

Of course fast-track allows developers to get away with a few extras, so the proposal includes 1,333 residential units and a skifield on Bowen Peak. There's no mention of sewage or water infrastructure, but I guess that'll become someone else's problem.

The company also plans to build a retail, hospitality and tourism precinct on public land in the recreation reserve at One Mile.

Bowen Peak Ltd is owned by Dr Guy Hingston, an Australian cancer surgeon with zero experience in either aerial ropeways or property development.

Dr Hingston says he kept applying because of a "lifelong desire to help others". How very magnanimous of him.

  8. CW: Queenstown gondola - contains traces of Rod Drury

In an unexpected twist, criticism of Rod Drury's fast-track Queenstown gondola proposal has come from QLDC.

While the project is being sold as "public transport", the proposed routes exclude Fernhill, Lakeview, Arthurs Point and areas along Frankton Rd.

The council says the gondola risks becoming a ‘‘white-elephant’’ few locals use. The proposal placed ‘‘heavy reliance’’ on unsecured public funding from the council, ORC and NZTA, while "ongoing maintenance and operating costs had not been detailed representing a ‘‘significant oversight’’ in assessing the long-term feasibility."

For applicants, the beauty of fast-track is the way lack of detail is baked into the system. A glossy proposal with made-up numbers is enough to fool ministers, then you rely on public money to fund the project.

Now he's under investigation for sexual assault, you'd expect that Rod Drury's involvement will raise additional red flags. Last year he was behind the mini-city with attached gondola project at the foot of Coronet Peak. That one failed the fast-track process.

  9. CW: Queenstown cable car fast-tracked

Rod Drury's ambitious cable car project has been accepted for the fast-track process by Shane Jones. I thought it was meant to whiz tourists into town, eliminating the need for rental cars? This line suggests otherwise.

"It is expected that the Queenstown Cable car would take up to 3000 passengers an hour each way and be located only 20 minutes’ drive from the airport."

What? The company's map even shows an "Airport Station". How can that be a 20 minute drive from the airport? Who is planning this stuff?

  12. CW: NZ: fast-track - Ayrburn screen hub

Another day, another fast-track project which would normally have failed most environmental and planning laws has been rubber-stamped by the Luxon government's 'experts'.

This time it's the "Ayrburn Screen Hub" which will be plonked in Dalefield... one of the wealthiest parts of the Wakatipu.

On the surface it's a film hub and the financial viability of studios is always a dodgy one. However friends of friends who work for Winton have let slip that what they're really getting away with is building a 200 bed hotel in Dalefield.

Fast-track: producing results for donors which would otherwise have failed every test.

The only positive to this decision is the way it's pissing off the development's true blue, ultra-wealthy Speargrass Flat neighbours. This is what you get for supporting National & Act. Nya nya nya!

  17. CW: Veolia - shitting on NZ

How did Veolia, a French multinational with a poor track record, get contracts to run Wellington's wastewater and fill Wellington harbour with a giant plume of shit?

It's the same in Queenstown where Veolia mismanaged the Shotover Wastewater Plant which is still discharging muck into the Shotover River every day.

This story outlines a few of Veolia's transgressions in other parts of the world.

  19. Yet another proposed Queenstown subdivision with 2,531 houses is racing through the fast-track process. This time it's 'Homestead Bay', on the southern border of Jack's Point.

NZTA says taking into account other consented developments, Homestead Bay will tip the scales and the southern corridor will soon exceed the capacity of SH6.

Queenstown Council is already pumping dodgy sewage into the Kawarau River and has no spare wastewater capacity to connect the new subdivision.

But no worries... a 3 person panel has given it the go-ahead anyway. Landscape architect Joanna Dey submitted:

"If growth continues without careful management, the very qualities that make this district desirable — its landscape, community character and liveability — will be permanently eroded."

I'd argue that unmanaged growth has been a hallmark of Queenstown planning for more than twenty years. Fast-track has just amplified the greed.

  20. Here's an extraordinary figure from Stats NZ -- the number of dwellings consented per 1,000 residents in the year to September.

    3.1 - Clutha district
    3.2 - Waitaki district
    3.6 - Dunedin
    33.7 - Queenstown

While QT's building boom suits property developers and governments reliant on eternal growth, the area's infrastructure is already struggling and the Council is pumping semi-treated sewage into the Kawarau river every day.

Queenstown is on track to become New Zealand's most polluted traffic jam.

  24. Flood warnings have been issued for the Queenstown Lakes with an alert that Glenorchy could be particularly hard-hit.

The ORC says "It’s likely there could be extensive flooding of the northwest part of the township, similar to what occurred in February 2020."

In Queenstown 300-400mm of flooding was likely in low-lying sections of Beach St, Rees St, Marine Parade, Church St and Earl St.

There's the added possibility of landslides in the Makarora area and on parts of the Queenstown-Glenorchy Rd.

  26. A proposed Queenstown charter school has had its fast-track application refused.

The libertarian Liger Leadership Academy set up in QT in 2022 and operate in an office building in Frankton, catering to around 40 students. Their new school would have held 250 and was part of the 'Coronet Village' proposal which seems to have gone belly up since Rod Drury walked away.

However Ligar had already announced that they'd close their existing school at the end of this year and replace it with the charmingly named 'Atlas High School'.

Is that name a tilt to Seymour? One can only shrug.

  30. The fast-tracked Coronet Village project to build a gondola plus a 780 dwelling subdivision has hit speed wobbles.

Their highest profile supporter, Rod Drury, has pulled his backing "after listening to local community opposition to the large residential development".

Locals did not want another 800 homes parked at the base of Coronet Peak.

Drury gives the impression that he was only interested in the gondola proposal, and the subdivision had been tacked on afterwards by other people.

Crux suggests Drury’s withdrawal may have initiated "something of a domino effect as other parties are now reconsidering their involvement in the gondola project."
