Powerful and imbued with Loach's passionate sense of humanity, it's a great watch. It confronts working-class xenophobia but also its sense of togetherness and community. Solidarity, not charity, is the film's message.

#TheOldOak è il solito Ken Loach (in senso buono): lucido, audace e senza compromessi nell'affrontare di petto un problema complesso (l'immigrazione, stavolta) sotto una lente politica e di lotta di classe mai banale.
A livello narrativo non funziona tutto, alcuni personaggi e sottotrame emergono e scompaiono un po' a caso e il finale sospeso non funziona come in Sorry We Missed You, ma il #cinema ha bisogno di film così intelligenti, anche quando non del tutto riusciti.

I went to the cinema to see The Old Oak by Ken Loach with people from the British Cultural Center where my son takes English classes.
It's moving. It shockingly depicts contrasts but also similarities between the Syrian refugees sent to this Northern England village and the local population.
The core message is about hope. If I have to be honest it was a bit annoying to listen to some people reviewing it as idealistic afterwards.
