Overnight temperatures in Houston are forecasted to be in the low 30s on Wednesday and Thursday, while outlying areas could see temps dip into the mid-20s as much of Texas prepares for what could be the last major cold front of the winter season.

If only there were some technology that would mean the Texas power grid isn't so isolated, able to send power out of the state when production is high and able to draw on sources out of state when demand is high... Something like a more interconnected power grid...

Officials from the Electric Reliability Council of Texas said that while winter presents a greater risk of outages, new power generation added to the grid has lowered the probability of emergency conditions.

My nervous twitch since February 2021 is to go check on ERCOT.
Is the Texas grid still there? Still?
This pricing map on May 8, 2024 shows a wobbly day.
Price has gone from $60 to $3000 per megawatt hour.
My local CPS Energy will have to pay that rate to keep my lights on. They call it Fuel Adjustment as they add to my bill.
Wind is not adding 30% of load as it did two days ago. It's 100F at the border, and humid.

Two massive winter storms have laid bare the increased vulnerability of U.S. power grids, and time is running out to reduce the risk for this year.

The main Texas power grid has entered emergency conditions, its operator says, meaning Texans should create a plan in case rolling blackouts are necessary to keep the grid operating. #Texas #texaspowergrid

If you look with a microscope, you’ll see that the “drip pan” is the stamped metal part that rests on top of the frame and is around the burner. We can only presume that the “grate” is what they document as the “Pan Supports,” the 3mm aluminum parts connected to the stamped metal piece that includes the “Drip Pan.”

CAVEATS (1 of 3)

A “WARINING” [sic] prominently printed on the outside of this product reads, “Never use this stove without the drip pan and grate in place.”

There is no closed bottom on this product and food can fall all the way through via the opening around in inside the burner element, so you’ll want to have a true drip pan underneath this product when using it, especially indoors.

WARNING, the Chef-Master stove model 90027 as sold on Amazon code B01N2AESJA is DANGEROUS.

The product clearly contains this warning: “WARINING: Never use this stove without the drip pan and grate in place” [sic], but it is sold without a drip pan and no such drip pan exists.

It’s not clear what they mean by “grate.”

Well, the weather outside is frightful and getting frightful-er.

Please keep a happy thought for the Tejas grid--stable as far as we can tell right now. Freezing rain (more) on the way tonight and well into tomorrow.
