It is easier to curtail an electron vs generating an electron.

  10. You want the answer. And you want the answer now. Not because you need it now, but because you fear you will forget your question & lose your train of thought.
If you could opt-in & have your answer come a few hrs or day later, reminding you of your thought train, indeed helping sustain & grow it, you’d be fine with a delayed response. If you knew you’d be helping saving the grid from status quo turning on dirty energy to meet immediate #AI demands, you’d be all for it, no? #DemandResponse

  11. After being sent in circles for an answer to a simple eligibility question about the residential #ConnectedSolutions #DemandResponse program by #MassSave and #Eversource, including MassSave.com sending me to Eversource.com then Eversource sending me to dead end, I sleuthed and found that they’ve outsourced customer support to energyhub.com. Waiting on an answer now six days from inquiry from #EnergyHub.

  12. #ISONewEngland’s profit model is based on a scarcity mindset, which works against abundant renewables and conservation. Exhibit A is ISO’s opposition to mentioning #DemandResponse as a tool to manage #eclipse2024.

For the rest of my term as a member of the #ConsumerLiaisonGroup I will be emphasizing an #abundancemindset to grow a resilient and healthy grid for all.

  14. This is why #ISONewEngland is all talk & no action on #DemandResponse: it beats gas/oil peakers badly in the market, at the moments when gas/oil plants otherwise profit most.

“Most DRR’s [Demand Response Resources] are offered extra-marginally in the energy market - i.e., they offer at a very high energy price.” (See slide in link for full slide text)

  15. #DemandResponse pairs *extremely well* with solar & wind, almost like they were made for each other.

That’s exactly why #ISONewEngland silenced that message in #EclipseGate, and why they try to keep discussions of DR & renewables separated. It hurts gas Peaker plant profits, who dominate #NEPOOL, ISO’s “partner”.

  19. Good news! #ISONewEngland has offered to answer questions about #DemandResponse at the June 4th #ConsumerLiaisonGroup public meeting coming up in Holyoke. DM if you need a ride.

This comes on the heels of this #EclipseGate kerfuffle wherein #ISONewEngland failed to mention DR as a tool to maintain grid balance during the eclipse. Maybe because they don’t actually use it? Hopefully we’ll find out.

  24. #ISONewEngland talks a good game on strategic conservation, aka #DemandResponse (as recently as 2 weeks ago!), but when it comes down to it, must not be interested in saving energy, climate, air quality and ratepayer money. Because that's at odds with profiting off scarcity, the #ISONewEngland business model. isonewswire.com/2024/03/19/fir

  25. Still time to register for today's webinar to learn from two experts (from EEA & ACER) on how European Member States, by collaborating strategically, can unlock flexibility and enhance energy security, while contributing to long-term climate neutrality.

  26. I find it really amazing to see how quickly new types of demand response are becoming mainstream. Here: Windows enabling access to the ⚡️Grid Forecast API for all apps.

Soon any device with 🔌&🛜 will be grid smart. Now we 'just' need the right regulations & markets to reward flexibility.

  27. fascinating how quickly 24/7 CFE is advancing. Still missing a bit on #DemandResponse here - that could surely help - a lot - with the last 10%?

  28. The EU Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER) has published its report on barriers to #DemandResponse and distributed energy resources. It's a report that's sure to be a go-to resource for the next year, and the attached selection of figures from the report may give you reasons to put it at the top of your reading list for next year.

  29. Last month, two 🇪🇺 EU agencies (ACER, the European Union Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators, and EEA, the European Environment Agency) published this joint report looking at what countries should do to increase flexibility and resilience in the energy system: flexibility from all resources, large and small, and better interconnection for more cross-border flexibility.

  30. The rise of renewable electricity comes with times of abundance; there are many good uses for shifting demand to those times, rather than curtailing supply.

While many of the early (residential) #demandresponse programmes, or grid operators’ involvement in #EVcharging, focused on reducing peak demand, I like the new focus on turning up demand.

    Some recent examples: 🧵

  31. UK’s National Grid ESO is inviting proposals to trial new #metering approaches to simplify the participation of distributed energy resources - such as EVs and smart charging points - in the balancing mechanism:

  32. New #IEA International Energy Agency report on the benefits of demand response in buildings (cooling, heating, EV⚡️) with case studies and clear recommendations. While the focus is on emerging and developing countries, surely others have much to gain from these recommendations!
