How Richard Feynman Found the Root of the Challenger Disaster
    "
".. O-rings .. these rings were never intended to be used to cover expanding gaps, .. "

".. felt frustrated by the slow pace + “time-consuming” public meetings + briefings “of so little use.” He did his own research .. even created his own report .. released publicly. .."

  6. A quirk of #space #history put all the the anniversary dates for #NASA crewed spaceflight tragedies a few days apart in late January and Feb 1.
    #Apollo1 pad fire: Jan 27, 1967 (59 years, 3 dead)
    • Challenger #STS51L launch explosion: Jan 28, 1986 (40 years, 7 dead)
    • Columbia #STS107 re-entry breakup: Feb 1, 2003 (23 years, 7 dead)
NASA holds a single "Day of Remembrance" one day each January, which was earlier than the historic dates this time, held Jan 22. nasa.gov/dor/

  7. Watched the launch live on German television. Noticed gray smoke, which I hadn't seen at any previous launch. Knew immediately that something went wrong with one of the SRBs.

I was frustrated and annoyed by the endless search for the cause and the ignoring of the obvious.

Had problems with my chemistry teacher because he just couldn't get to the point.
Now sometimes I think: Murder by management.

I hope they're making better estimates regarding Artemis II and its heat shield.

Challenger: The disaster five people saw coming

Forty years ago, the Challenger space shuttle disintegrated just after lift-off, killing its crew and changing the history of spaceflight. A small team of engineers tried to prevent the tragedy — but they were overruled.

  9. 38 years ago, Jan 28, 1986: #STS51L #Challenger launch explosion, 7 dead. "Go Fever" was again a core factor, the rush to launch amid known risks, in this case cold #weather making booster o-rings inflexible. nasa.gov/challenger-sts-51l-ac #NASA #DayOfRemembrance #space #history

  10. I was just a kid, but I remember it well. The confusion, the slow motion horror, all framed so jarringly against that blue sky.

37 years later, I still know all their names.
