  1. This one I remember clearly because I was an eyewitness: 23 years ago, Feb 1 2003, Space Shuttle Columbia #STS107 broke up on re-entry. The crew of 7 and fragments of the spacecraft were recovered from Texas and Louisiana. But 10 minutes before breakup, eyewitnesses on the West Coast, including me on Mount Hamilton near San Jose CA, saw the billowing smoke trail as Columbia flew by in the pre-dawn sky. This link is a thread I posted 2 years ago. spacey.space/@AstroHawk/111858 #NASA #space #history

  2. A quirk of #space #history put all the the anniversary dates for #NASA crewed spaceflight tragedies a few days apart in late January and Feb 1.
    #Apollo1 pad fire: Jan 27, 1967 (59 years, 3 dead)
    • Challenger #STS51L launch explosion: Jan 28, 1986 (40 years, 7 dead)
    • Columbia #STS107 re-entry breakup: Feb 1, 2003 (23 years, 7 dead)
NASA holds a single "Day of Remembrance" one day each January, which was earlier than the historic dates this time, held Jan 22. nasa.gov/dor/

  14. People are talking about Columbia's break-up OTD in 2003. Someone once told me much of the wreckage was stored in a room in the Vertical Assembly Building at Kennedy Space Center. In 2012, I happened to be there for a story on the end of the shuttle program and took an elevator up to that room. Looked inside. Yes, pieces of Columbia were laid out. Felt like a tresspasser on a grave site or something so left pretty quickly. Eerie and sad.

  15. Ad Astra per Aspera... In the ruins of Onizuka AFS, Sunnyvale, California was an off the books Space Shuttle Columbia Memorial. It was behind what was the tank and antenna farm for the Blue Cube. It has been vandalized beyond recognition now sadly. I came across it in 2018 and tried to get the USAF or NASA to at least try to preserve it to no avail.

To the crew of STS 107, your courage will never be forgotten.

  16. When we organized gatherings in 2004 & 2005 in SJ for #STS107 Columbia photographers & eyewitnesses, we found everyone who went out to see the re-entry experienced a mourning reaction as if we knew the crew, unlike those who saw it on news. #NASA #DayOfRemembrance #space #history

  17. Mt Hamilton near San Jose was unique on the 1000+ mile corridor where #STS107 eyewitnesses met each other that morning. I was talking via Ham Radio with Don AA6W who was on the Santa Cruz Mountains. Everywhere else eyewitnesses were alone. (Many eyewitnesses on Mt Hamilton met when we all pulled over at a turnout near the summit after viewing the re-entry pass.) #NASA #DayOfRemembrance #space #history

  18. #STS107 is personal for me. On Feb 1, 2003 I drove up Mt Hamilton to get above the fog and see the pre-dawn Columbia re-entry. I became an eyewitness to disaster, a billowing smoke trail instead of the expected meteor streak of prior re-entries. #DayOfRemembrance #space #history

  19. 21 years ago, Feb 1, 2003: #STS107 Space Shuttle Columbia re-entry accident, 7 dead. Investigation later found plausible ways to rescue crew if #NASA managers had looked into observed ice impact on orbiter during launch. nasa.gov/remembering-columbia- #DayOfRemembrance #space #history
