Really enjoying my Pokémon Emerald run that started as a failed Nuzlocke. Sapphire was the version I had as a kid so encountering the improvements to base Gen 3 has been fun.
Just beat Norman this morning. I forgot about how Norman's Slaking is the Gen 3 Whitney's Miltank, single handedly dealing many teams a very bad day.
Now to gear up for Winona. Are the polarized Pikas and Manetric my only electric options this gen?

My First Nuzlocke
So, Pokémon games have been in my wheelhouse since 1999, when a friend from school let me try his copy of Pokémon Red on a flight from Seattle to Washington Dulles for our school DC trip. They were one of my earliest introductions to RPGs, so I guess they're responsible for my interest in a bunch of stuff I've written about here. I played Red, Blue, and Yellow endlessly. I played a fan translation of Gold before saving up money to buy a copy on the day it released in the US. (And then had […] -

A Night with Cyberpunk Red
This past weekend, my gaming group had a bunch of people who were out, so I ran a one-on-one Cyberpunk Red mission for one of my players who's been playing a lot of Cyberpunk 2077. My own Cyberpunk knowledge comes from reading Snow Crash and Neuromancer, and from years reading through the short fiction in and game mastering Shadowrun across two different editions (20th Anniversary 4th and 5th Editions in my case). With my previous cyberpunk game being Shadowrun which often revolves around […]https://alexanderkeane.com/2026/01/19/a-night-with-cyberpunk-red/

Session Stories: Aftershocks of the Last War, Session 1
This post originally appeared on the previous incarnation of this blog on September 18, 2024. I recently started a new campaign with my group. It's one I've wanted to do for ages, since I actually sat down and read the Eberron setting. Eberron is a setting which looks to answer the question "What would technology look like if it were made of magic?" There are trains and long distance communications and airships and magical robot soldiers and wandslinging wizard soldiers. The setting […]https://alexanderkeane.com/2025/12/21/session-stories-aftershocks-of-the-last-war-session-1/

Just finished #DnD night. Ended a chapter of the campaign when my players fell under the influence of an imprisoned rage demon and assassinated an Archbishop triggering a prophecy that shattered one of the shards of the demon's prison.
So, uh, nice knowing you Thaliost.

Yesterday, I ran a solo #dnd game for a friend set in #Eberron
It was so much fun that we decided we will now have a solo campaign focused on the ongoing adventures of Darreon Graysteel, who had to recover his memories from the mind flayer Magnetor.
Darreon recovered his memories, but Magnetor got away this time.
Now to travel Aundair looking for the other victims.

Last Saturday, my group played a session from the Gatewalkers adventure path.
I've been inspired by the play reports from @loottheroom to do my own play reports to try and understand why I make decisions in game that I do and do better next time.
I've uploaded that play report to my blog: https://alexanderkeane.com/2024/02/28/session-stories-2-24-24-pathfinder-session/
We had fun, but there were definitely moments I think I could have handled beter.

We had a false start after character creation where as I've only read and haven't *played* Blades in the Dark or other Forged in the Dark games, I just jumped in and then realized there were whole sections of the play kit about factions we hadn't done yet.
If I'd laid out the text, I might have placed the "World We're In" section closer to the character creation bits, or added a reference to it in the original five setting creation questions. 4/

My group decided that we're doing a 90s Era #Lovecraftian set of monsters. Who have acquired a child from a summer camp. The child is also wanted by the US government as they are one of the last unaccounted youths from Innsmouth.
One player is doing his corrupted by horrors and used as test subject for weird weapons PI from stories he's written as the Bruiser-Brute, the other is playing the miraculously resurrected Camp Dog as the Hearth-Heart. 2/

Last night, I got in a Session 0 of #ProtectTheChild by @mintrabbit
We got through world creation and character creation after starting a bit late and with a misunderstanding of how much setting actually needed built. Which was totally on me for forgetting the session was happening and not doing the last-minute read-through.
I like the feel so far, even though we didn't get to the actual play part of the game. 1/

Last night, I ran through The Positronic Library by Yochai Gal, using #ElectricBastionland It was such a good night with a couple members of my usual gaming group.
I wrote a bit more on my blog: https://alexanderkeane.com/2023/05/14/the-positronic-library-and-electric-bastionland/
Highlights are that the system is really speedy and really well tuned for allowing the Conductor (GM) room to rule things on the spot. The adventure was the same, with a lot of room to riff on the themes. Looking forward to more.

Last night, my table was looking for a game to play, and settled on Supernormal, a one-page RPG from Ursidice.
It was a great time, and this is a game I would love to run again. I'll be printing it off for my GM Binder. I've written more about my table's experiences on my blog. (CW for blog post, one player chose a body horror monster for his superpower)

It was crazy, chaotic fun. Definitely one I want to play again.

Last weekend, I wrote about some of my first experiences DMing in college. There were only a few campaigns, so I kind of squished those into one post.
I'm looking at continuing with the GMing I did at a store where I ran multiple organized play campaigns, playtests, and some home groups on top of that. I feel like breaking stuff down by system makes more sense there.
I'll probably start with #Shadowrun
Any specific genre of GM stories from the table people like?

I found a bunch of my old notes on an old hard drive which got me thinking about the games I've run since I started GMing in college.
That was a little over a decade ago, so I figure it's better to split it up into parts based on which group I was with.
https://alexanderkeane.com/2023/02/04/my-experiences-as-a-designated-dm/
Part 1 is based on the experiences I had as a brand new DM with my Seattle group, never running the same system two campaigns in a row.

I mentioned the lethality of the critical hits in my group's playtest of the #13thAge Playtest here right afterward, but I wanted to write some more about the experience.
We had a lot of fun running Blood and Lightning, even if the Bubbly Cleric of Darkness and the rogue who was the son of the Diabolist both died.
We can't wait to play again.
