Some good news about Chandra via Yvette Cendes (@whereisyvette.bsky.social) on BlueSky.
The X-ray telescope had been facing mission-ending-level budget cuts. They have been given a 1-year reprieve to avoid layoffs.

I really wish that my mission's 25th birthday wasn't being overshadowed by discussions on just how much it should be killed 😔

I have a Love/Hate (mostly Hate) relationship with the Ars Technica comments section, particularly where space is concerned, but it's heartening to see this pro-#ChandraXRay comment sitting on 94 updoots to 0 downdoots on the Hubble Gyro article.
It has been a bit disheartening the past three months to worry about our healthy, productive, and unique mission being terminated abruptly, and so it's good to see the public is getting that message.

Curious about the #Chandra X-ray Observatory? John Michael Godier has a nice overview up right now. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6jpqzBIoUE
There's still time to write to or call your congresscritters to ask them to #SaveChandra. Please consider it. Thanks! https://www.savechandra.org/

In other news, I just sent emails to all my congresscritters asking them to save the #Chandra X-ray Observatory. https://www.savechandra.org/act #SaveChandra

Strange yet heartening to see YouTube celebrities pick up the #SaveChandra banner!

If you live in the US, please consider contacting your representatives about preserving funding for the Chandra X-Ray telescope, because there isn’t a replacement or alternative even planned yet, and the cost of maintaining it is, as always, a drop in the bucket compared to the operational expenses of a single piece of military hardware. #SaveChandra

Call your congresscritters and urge them to do the right thing

In 1999 #NASA launched Chandra, the most advanced X-ray observatory which still works properly and it's recording high quality images from the cosmos after 25 years.
But it's dying.
The US Congress is cutting Chandra's budget for 2025 and eventually killing it with no replacement planned, and this will be a huge shock for X-ray astronomy. You can help prevent this problem, visit:

A legendary Great Observatory is proposed for cancellation in the FY25 President’s Budget Request. It’s not too late.

Youtube channel Veritasium raising awareness about NASA and US congress possibly cutting budget on the Chandra X-ray space telescope. Without a replacement, a whole spectrum of the cosmos will no longer be marvelled at because of trivially small budget cuts.
To my american friends, please head over to https://www.savechandra.org/ and see what you can do to prevent this.
Spread the word!

Why might a telescope in space need some "me time"? Well, there are times it has to do some calibration work, but mainly it has to cool off since sitting around collecting X-ray photons can be quite exhausting.
In space no-one can hear you scream
...
for an umbrella.

Here's a view of what Chandra is doing now. You can see recently-done and planned observations split by instrument (including grating choice) and by the SIMBAD classification (a rough idea about what is being looked at, but there's much more to a Chandra observation than just the target).
The summary bar at the top shows that most of the time Chandra is doing Science (otherwise it's moving between targets, taking some "me" time, or hiding from the radiation belts).

You've all heard by now about the release of version 2.1 of the Chandra Source Catalog, haven't you?

You see a lot of Voyager 1&2 in my timeline, but I have room in my ❤️ for other legacy #space missions and an important one is on the chopping block right now - the Chandra x-ray telescope
The link in this @AstroKatie post explains why contracting Congressional reps does help and offers really specific information on how to do it (it’s easy!) You can also sign a letter of support in seconds
