"What if America Went Completely Dark?

It was April 16, 2013.
The shooters — two, maybe more — took up positions 30 to 40 yards outside the substation fence, in the dry scrubland near Coyote Creek. At 1:31 a.m., after a security camera recorded what looked like a signal from a flashlight, they began firing high-powered rifles into the facility. Sparks flew into the air whenever the bullets grazed the chain-link fence, but most of the shots hit their apparent targets: a row of truck-size power transformers, which step down high-voltage electricity to lower voltages so it can be sent to local homes and businesses. Because this was Silicon Valley, those customers included some of the largest tech companies in the world.
After some 120 shots, 17 of Metcalf’s transformers had been disabled. The attackers knew to aim for the units’ cooling systems, oil-filled fins similar to those on a radiator, which draw heat away from the electrified core. That allowed the oil, 52,000 gallons of it, to drain out slowly so that the transformers wouldn’t fail right away, which would have triggered an alarm. The gunmen could take their time.

One PG&E executive called the shooting a 'dress rehearsal' for future attacks, and indeed, in the past decade, dozens of facilities — in Arkansas and Oregon, Florida and Washington — have been targeted, often using the same tactic as the one seen in 2013: puncturing the cooling system and letting the oil drain out.
The most successful of these attacks happened in Moore County, N.C., in December 2022, when someone used a gun to disable multiple transformers in two substations operated by Duke Energy. This time, there was a blackout: 45,000 people lost power, some for as long as five days. No suspects have been named in the investigation, but several foiled substation attacks have involved right-wing extremists. Among neo-Nazi and accelerationist groups, Metcalf has been studied as a model for years. In 2024, five members of a group that one member called 'a modern-day SS' were given prison sentences of 21 months to 10 years for plotting to destroy transformers throughout the Mountain West.

Durkovich worries that our enemies will feel newly emboldened to consider substations a valid target. 'The United States is actually normalizing attacking critical infrastructure within Venezuela and Iran,' she said. Just this month, Iran was linked to recent sabotage of water systems in several states. The grid could be an even bigger prize for the right adversary: Without an army or a fleet of bombers or a nuke, you could cripple the United States for years."

Something else I want to add is that in order to really understand what's going on, you absolutely need Marx, even if his ideas need a lot of updates to be applicable to our modern world. I said "Marx", not "Marxism"--we need a way of looking at the political economy, we need to understand that you cannot separate the economy from politics or culture, and we need to understand what capital is, how it works, and why markets and the very idea of private property carry within them the seeds of their self-destruction.
Many people have again and again tried to update Marx' ideas for different places and different times, but they rarely just built a newer model of political economy but almost always also a recipe for revolution, a theory about how to build a society to overcome capitalism, and almost of them have failed; we must take that into account. Also, most socialist countries built by Marxists aren't really places where I would want to live, many were and some still are quite horrible. The idea that you need an authoritarian dictatorship to keep everything under control and to keep the bourgeoisie down leads to nightmares of corruption and the abuse of power at immense scales.
Now the Western response to this was Social Democracy, which is basically the idea that by using a strong labour movement with strong unions and a social democratic party, capitalism can be fenced in, limited in scope, made to work for everyone, using taxes and Keynesianism. The problem is that social democracy just tries to create a stable version of capitalism without the drawbacks, and it only works as long as the economy is booming. After the world got its first taste of global growth limits in the 1970s, the social democratic model began to die, replaced by neoliberal rubbish. Now that growth is probably over forever after hitting the planetary boundaries, that path is not a serious option anymore.
Anarchism, however, is always an option. Instead of trying to plan everything out and have expert commissions and committees of the Communist Party come up with a clear roadmap (which of course always fails in the end because the real world is always too complex for human beings to ever fully understand and too chaotic to ever really control), the people working together directly and making their own decisions as needed can find solutions that work even if they're ugly and held together with chewing gum and string. Also, having multiple local groups working on all kinds of different solutions makes it much more likely that some of those solutions actually work in the long run.
The main problem with Anarchism is that it is very hard to defend against its enemies. You cannot organise anything resembling a regular army if disobedience is one of your basic principles. Guerrilla warfare is possible with small groups of anarchist warriors, but if you're in a regular war facing regular soldiers, the odds are not on your side. And as soon as anarchists are gaining success and turning entire regions into liberated autonomous zones, somebody will mobilise troops against them. How to defend against the enemy without giving up the principles of disobedience, equality, and autonomy?One thing that might play out to our advantage is that the escalating chaos on Earth due to the #polycrisis makes it much harder to maintain centralised structures of all kind. And systems that have been hit by natural disasters don't need much in the way of #sabotage to shut down completely.

J'ai entendu un truc sur le droit à débrancher des serveurs quand les gens concernés par l'usage de #serveurs se mettent en #grève comme une évolution du #DroitDeGrève , notamment pour que ce ne soit plus considéré comme un #sabotage et donc pas condamnable en justice (même si le sabotage c'est fichtrement romantique)

Anyone with military experience (and most people without this experience) who is watching the wars in Ukraine and Iran should understand that drones help the military win wars. Whisky Pete Hegseth decided to eliminate a drone battalion in the United States. How drunk was he when he made that stupid decision?
