  1. I have fond memories of using this calculator growing up. It’s been stolen on several occasions from my father during moves and he’s replaced it just as many times.

When he passed, it was one of his things that I wanted, but it also mysteriously disappeared.

I purchased my own today and am happy. It’s not the calculator my father used, but it’s still a first gen 12C and it brings me joy.

  2. arxiv.org/pdf/2603.21852 This is interesting! All functions on a scientific calculator can be reduced to just '1' and this dyadic function 'EML'. @NanoRaptor If you ever felt like creating an HP voyager calculator with a very limited number of buttons... I think we could get away with just '1' 'EML', roll down and x<>y. Maybe on. And the most important one '%'. :)

  3. Back in the late 90s, when TI already ruled calculators in High Schools, I selected HP48 as my platform. It is a high-end engineering calculator with CAS capabilities, native units, stack based interface and programmable in RPL.

Recently I purchased a near mint HP48G and again have a physical calculator on my desk.

Between rich library, various symbolic solvers and even ... more on:

  11. "All Hewlett-Packard pocket calculators feature RPN logic- the most sensible logic system a pocket calculator can have!"

This beautiful short introduction to (Reverse Polish Notation) is from Hewlett-Packard's Pocket Calculator Buyer's Guide printed in 1975.

  12. The MINUTEMAN * 6X was an early calculator by from 1974, the company that was later famous for legendary computers like the Commodore 64 and the family. The supported (reverse Polish notation), had a 2-level stack and arithmetics for integers and currency values.

  13. I'm out of touch in that only last year I learned that calculators are no longer produced. I still use my , but but if I want to replace it, I need to buy one on E-Bay. Apparently handheld calculators with buttons and are thing of the past. Time flies.

  14. These are my recommendations for the iPhone apps that emulate various #HP #RPN #scientific calculators, in the ascending order of capabilities:

    • HP-35—apps.apple.com/us/app/hp-35/id
    • HP-45—apps.apple.com/us/app/rpn-45-s
    • HP-25CE—apps.apple.com/us/app/rpn-25-c
    • HP-67—apps.apple.com/us/app/rpn-67-s
    • HP-15C (free)—apps.apple.com/us/app/retro-15
    • HP-41CX—apps.apple.com/us/app/i41cx/id
    • HP-42S (free)—apps.apple.com/us/app/free42/i
    • HP-48 (free)—apps.apple.com/us/app/i48/id32
    • HP Prime (free)—apps.apple.com/us/app/hp-prime

Of those, my favourite is the HP-15C emulator. The vibe I get from this app on my iPhone is almost like when I use my original, 1980s HP-15C. And that is a high praise for this app, considering the massive difference between HP's venerable tactile keys and the iPhone's vapid touch screen. Oh, and, it is free!

  15. The original HP-15C from 1982 was my first programmable #RPN #calculator. I bought mine in 1985. By then, I was an upper-level #EE student, with a few years of #programming experience in a handful of languages from different paradigms, including assembly. Yet, I found keystroke programming on the HP-15C to be a challenge.

This little machine could store only 500 keystrokes in its memory, and the instructions were shown as numeric codes. It was rather like programming on the ET-3400 or the KIM-1—it was a right mess. Still, the HP-15C was the best engineer's pocket computer I could afford then, and I thoroughly enjoyed learning to use it well.

Not long after, when I entered the industry, EEs were all using MATLAB on Sun workstations, and our RPN calculators mostly sat on the desk. That was the beginning of the end for calculators. Yet, to this day, the HP-15C remains my all-time favourite RPN calculator.

PS—Those who are curious about programming the various HP RPN calculators may read my article on the subject.

  19. Moravia (the current owner of the HP calculator IP) has announced they'll be making a Collector's Edition of the 16C RPN programmer's calculator next year:

    youtu.be/vwgQu2s7rxY?t=1185

HP made dozens of scientific and business calculators over the years, but they only ever made one programmer's calculator, so I don't expect this one to stick around for very long.

  20. Courtesy of Eric Rechlin of hpcalc.org, now you can watch a fat ugly guy who says "um" far too often, at HHC 2025 talking about and demonstrating the forthcoming Nonpareil II microcode-level simulation of various HP RPN calculators (currently HP-15C and HP-16C):

    youtube.com/watch?v=eraikEonaJQ

The audience really liked that the graphics is fully scalable, rather than only having integer multiple scaling of a bitmap, in the original Nonpareil.

  22. At HHC 2025, I learned of the existence of another HP-95C in private hands, which makes four that I know of.

The HP-95C was a desktop scientific programmable printing calculator, with continuous (CMOS) memory but no card reader. It would have been introduced in 1976, positioned between the HP-91 desktop non-programmable printing scientific, and the HP-97 desktop programmable printing scientific with magnetic card reader.

  23. I just gave an HHC 2025 presentation and demonstration of Nonpareil II, my work--in-progress microcode-level HP calculator simulator, now written in C++20 using the Qt6 toolkit. Compared to the original, it uses vector graphics for smooth scaling over a wide range of window sizes.
