4 Ways to Redeem Your World Cup Experience

I love the World Cup. Honestly, I love any time we get to support our country. I don’t even think I’m terribly patriotic, but when I hear the national anthem and see the Red, White, and Blue, I can’t help but feel a little proud. But, just like anything else, the World Cup can become an obsession, and sports generally are the approved idols of the day. So I’ve been thinking of some ways to redeem the time during the World Cup.

Enjoy It For God’s Sake

First, did you know that Christians can enjoy sports? Being able to enjoy the things God has given is a gift from God. “Everyone also to whom God has given wealth and possessions and power to enjoy them, and to accept his lot and rejoice in his toil–this is the gift of God” (Ecc 5:19). But Christians enjoy things in a Christian way. We enjoy them for God’s sake. We can enjoy soccer without making it an idol, because we know through whom every good gift comes (James 1), and we know for whom they exist. Christians actually should out-enjoy every lost person on the planet, because we know Who it’s all for.

Pray For The Nations

We are in the round of 32 at this point in the tournament. That means that there are 32 different countries, with 32 different gospel needs, that you can bring before the Lord. For instance, did you know that Bosnia and Herzegovina, with a population of about 3 million people, is only 0.1% evangelical, with about half of the population considered unreached? This small country just to the south of Croatia is majority Muslim with about 8 different people groups in this one country. The World Cup brought this country to my attention, and now I can pray that the gospel would go forward in that place. Use resources like The Joshua Project or Operation World to help you pray more specifically.

Watch With Godly Brothers

Watching the World Cup is fun. Watching the World Cup with men who will encourage your soul and pursue the glory of Christ even in leisure is amazing. This is a great time to enjoy one another. It’s also a great time to share a verse that’s been encouraging you lately. You can dig in and ask about their family, their job, their joy in the Lord. Redeem the time together by encouraging each other. Sweet Christian fellowship is such a blessing, and this World Cup gives us an excuse to spend time together.

Turn It Off and Play With Your Kids

Finally, you can redeem your World Cup experience by turning off the TV and getting outside. Don’t just watch a bunch of 20-30 somethings run around. Go outside yourself and get a little exercise. Use it as an excuse to spend time with your kids. Kick a soccer ball around. Throw a baseball. Shoot a basketball. Join in on a game of tag. My boys are loving watching the game together and they’re convinced they are soccer experts now. I’m wanting to take advantage of their enthusiasm and get outside with them more. I know it’s hot, but take a hydration break like the pros.

So I’m enjoying the World Cup, and I’m cheering on the Red, White, and Blue. But I’m also trying to redeem the time. I don’t want to waste away my life in front of a TV watching sports, but I want to use this time to bring glory to Christ, encourage the saints, and enjoy the good gifts that God has given. Let’s pray for the nations together. And go USA!
