The deep self-censoring aspect of it that even prevents individuals from coming forward with ideas that could be seen as undesirable. After a lengthy discussion about military innovation, which I generally agree with, we are now discussing academic research. Speaking of money spent, David writes, “Overall levels of basic research funding have increased.” However, as someone who has seen it firsthand, it does not look good at all. Let me provide an example. Did you know that in most grants, food and medical fields are treated as one group? Since most able-bodied individuals only face difficulties when they get sick, the majority of these grants go towards medical research. #ableism This is maddening. Healthy food could prevent the need for medical intervention, yet we are not focusing on that.

Allow me a personal note here: In the following section David talks about that the Soviet government planned to create technologies outside of industrial, political or military interests. Like combatting world hunger or energy imbalances. One of these effort was a computer that does not work in binaries insted of trinaries. If you think about a second you can see that you can have positive charge, negative charge and no charge in an electrical system. Which makes three valid states to use. Even the system was Neumann and Turing compatible it never really got off the ground because every piece of software had to be rewritten for that. #ReadWithMe

Ngl I laughed at loud. David write here that some American thinker in the fifties thought the “Soviet system worked better.” As a person who grew up in the east block of Europe (Hungary) during the socialism I can assure you there is good and bad in the Soviet model. As like a lot of things in this life there is no obvious better or worse solution. #ReadWithMe

Again “value came from physical labor”. That’s only monetary value. Not personal or societal value. And because of these distinctions does not visible for a lot of thinkers. Grasping why is the value is disappearing (it is not) is hard for them. But back to David. Oh, “third technological revolution,” and “end of work”! What a trip to the memory lane this is for me. As a socialist, especially the endo of work was so desirable.
