  7. @michaelharley yeah. X is the final straw for me, too, I think.

We all have to put in the effort to use our feet and walk to a better future, or humanity doesn't move.

X is for people who are fine with eating where each other shit.

I have a lifetime membership to , so I don't have to stop paying but I'm going to stop using it.

Anybody care to invite me to your social bookmarking instance?

  9. Dear Pinboard, I'm breaking up with you. It's me and it's you.

I'm ditching Pinboard after 15 years because I've outgrown paying for a service that feels abandoned when I can just self-host the thing myself.

  11. @michaelharley Looks like the #pinboard domain renewal is taking its time to propagate news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4

That said, going self-hosted is not a bad option. Haven't used it myself but I've heard good things about #linkding - linkding.link/

  14. I got an email reply from the owner:
I’m so sorry for the outage. The domain failed to automatically renew, which is why the site went offline. I have renewed the domain manually, but there is a delay while the DNS records update, and unfortunately it has taken a few hours so far.

I actually heard more or less the same thing on another thread I found with the #pinboard tag. It's not back yet, for me, though, but it sounds like it very likely will be tomorrow.

  16. Pinboard (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pinboard) seems to be seriously down, like the domain can't even be located and an email to the support email address I got when I signed up in January 2026 bounced immediately with the error "Host or domain name not found".

I appreciated the low key UI that reminded me of the old del.icio.us site, which the owner of Pinboard bought in 2017 but never restored to my knowledge. I also like that it was a paid service so I wasn't the product, but since then I heard some rumblings that maybe I should have listened to. If it does come back up I'll back up my saved bookmarks.

I did find an email address for the owner, Maciej Ceglowski, and that didn't bounce, at least yet.

If anyone has any more data, let me know.

  18. Any other #pinboard users out there?

    pinboard.in

an online bookmarking site with a notoriously flaky and unresponsive owner is down today. Could be he forgot to renew something (domain is still registered but `whois` finds nothing). OTOH he maybe forgot to or purposely failed to renew, and now he is walking away. I hope this is just a temporary hiccup.

I do keep a local backup/mirror of my bookmarks modeled after pinboard. (I wrote it in #rust which was a fun challenge.)

Firefox web browser on an Ubuntu desktop

Why does this take an "app"?

    Oh

You're on your phone, of course

  26. Hey #Pinboard fans!
Is there a way to get a list of all the pages of my blog which have been pinned?

I know I can do something like pinboard.in/url:810584fd3e0fc4
    Which gets a single page.
But I can't search for my domain and find all its pages. There's nothing obvious in the API either.

    Is this possible?

  28. Once I migrated my bookmarks from Delicious to #Pinboard, and it was so good. I really liked Pinboard's minimal approach and paid each year for having them archive all the pages I've ever bookmarked. We're talking 20k+ pages which I've bookmarked over a time of 20+ years; of course, many of the oiriginal websites are no longer online.

Being able to do a full text search through that archive has become such a vital part of my everyday research. I really have buillt my own search engine over the years.

But now, I worry that Pinboard is on the decline. The guy running it doesn't seem to care as much anymore and many times when I bookmark a page, it's not archived (error code: 500).

So I might have to start looking for another #bookmarking service. One which will still archive everything and make it searchable for me. And which will also accept importing the 20k+ existing bookmarks.

Does anything like such an alternative even exist?

  30. I downloaded my archive from #Pocket expecting I might have a few dozen entries saved. The csv file had 692 items going back twelve years from around when I started using Firefox. There's a fair number of broken links, most but not all of them addressed by looking on the Wayback Machine.

At some point I'm going to put some of the keepers in #pinboard

  32. Anybody have any favorite self-hosted bookmark apps? I'm looking into #Linkding for its small footprint and active community.

I recently tried to switch from #Pinboard to #GoodLinks and I'm not super happy with it.

  33. I recently discovered pinscreen animation, seldom done because it's so laborious, but with uniquely attractive effects.

A short film by its inventors: youtube.com/watch?v=wYbjW7XrWD

Documentary on how it works: youtube.com/watch?v=vQ3DSFv4vA

    Commentary and resources: johncoulthart.com/feuilleton/t

  34. My winter break pet project is under way: a replacement for Tinboard, using a (hopefully) slightly less-toxic backend for the bookmarks. Lots to do, lots and lots to do, but it's a start.

  36. It’s been about 3 months now since I tried out #Raindrop as a #Pinboard replacement. Still working well for me. Have actually taken out a subscription. Only gripe is the dev seems totally unresponsive (emailed support with a minor issue; zero replies). Hopefully not an omen.
