@Trilobyter Beautiful photograph of the #redbellied #woodpecker, #Melanerpes #carolinus (#Picidae, Aves). A strikingly colored and biologically interesting bird, widespread in the eastern half of the #USA forming monogamous seasonal partnerships.The species is flexible regarding food, habitat, and nesting site. However, it seems to prefer moist, old, and not too densely overgrown deciduous #forests.Only the facial and nape coloration of this strikingly patterned bird exhibits #sexualdimorphism.

We don't usually see Red-bellied Woodpeckers feeding at the tips of twigs, although feeding behaviors can seasonally vary according to abundance of foods, and this was a very harsh winter for residents. This woodpecker's attention seemed to be focused on this flower bud. In the last shot, you can see the woodpeckers' distinctive barbed tongue, used for extracting larvae from tree-trunks.

First sapsucker of the year! Red-breasted, flying quietly around in a willow grove.

@KateShaw did a wonderful episode on woodpeckers https://strangeanimalspodcast.blubrry.net/2024/05/13/episode-380-woodpeckers/
but I'm too tired to write anything smart about it. -
Ugh, I love Lewis’s Woodpeckers so much. Their glossy night-green wing feathers! Their red and white checked waistcoats! Their velvety scarlet little faces! Arrgh!

I’m not saying I boost EVERY photo of a North American #woodpecker that I see. But I am saying if I see enough of them in a row, the tapping of my boost button may create a rhythmic drumming sound you can hear over a long distance! :sapsucker: 😁

I have found out where there may be some acorn woodpeckers close enough to easily go visit, and my non-#birding spouse does not seem to understand why this is a big high-pitched deal. ACORN WOOTPOCKERS! The little clown faces! THE GRANARY TREE BEHAVIOR! *swooning*

@loren
It me.
I get excited by woodpeckers the way others get by hawks.

Got startled by a bird call next to me at the Pandan River, Singapore. Turned and was delighted to see this male Common Flameback woodpecker (Dinopium javanense) on the tree. It was busy looking for food and calling out and paid no heed to the excited photographer nearby. :-) Shots taken on 15 Oct 2019.

Shots of a Banded Woodpecker (Chrysophlegma miniaceum) spotted by chance at Windsor Nature Park, Singapore, on 7 Sept 2019. This was at a heavily shaded spot on the walking path and I was fortunate to find a spot through the branches that gave me a view of it.
An uncommon resident in Singapore.

Saw a family of Rufous Woodpeckers (Micropternus brachyurus) moving together along a tree looking for food today at Tampines Eco Green, Singapore. This is something I haven't see before.
