  2. Patriots Day

Today is a holiday in Massachusetts. Patriots Day. Did I get the day off from work? Nope. I live in Massachusetts and I work in Massachusetts but I did not get the day off.

    Bummer.

The Red Sox played their annual Boston Marathon Monday 11:00am game. As the leaders were crossing the finish line I had a break between my nearly endless string of conferences calls that was long enough for me to put the game on the radio for a couple of innings.

The very first word I heard from the broadcast was, “disaster.” Uh oh. It was the third inning and Sonny Gray had just been pulled due to an injury. Disaster, indeed. Crud.

On one of my endless conference calls today a coworker from another group mentioned that she is about to go on a trip to Bermuda. I am so jealous. My parents went to Bermuda on their honeymoon. Based on that it’s practically required that I go someday, isn’t it? That’s how it works, right?

    I don’t know… maybe I just need a nap.

  3. Inflation is out of control everywhere. For the #RedSox, a win on #PatriotsDay might have just cost a whole starting pitcher. #baseball

    Happy Patriots' Day folks. #PatriotsDay

  5. Grrrr

251 years ago today the American Revolution began with a fight in Concord, MA that extended into a Colonial Militia harrassing a column of British troops in Lexington, MA. The shot heard ‘round the world, as it were.

That’s what happens when you piss off people from Massachusetts. Bank on it, mother fuckers.

I am so sick of seeing the nation that grew from that event in 1775 being run by fascists and pedophiles and criminals of all shapes and sizes. I am fucking sick of it.

I am so fucking mad I can’t even think straight anymore. Furious is way too polite a word.

The vigil is an annual lantern-light walk across the North Bridge with re-enactors, music, poetry, and a recitation of the names of the 122 who died in the battles of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1776.

  9. Patriots Day

Happy Patriots Day. No, we don’t have a holiday for a shitty football team. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has a state holiday to remember the start of the American Revolution. Fucking irony, eh?

Today is Marathon Monday in Boston. As a result, it is also the day we have the weirdness known as the 11:00am Red Sox game. The game starts early so that it ends at about the same time the Marathon runners are reaching Kenmore Square. You go to Fenway Park, watch the Red Sox, leave Fenway Park and head for the Green Line station and catch the leaders as they fly by. I’ve only participated in this once but it was a really cool experience.

Every year when Patriots Day comes around I go to work like it’s a normal Monday but I promise myself, I full on swear to myself, that next year… next year I am going to go to the North Bridge re-enactment of the first shots of the American Revolution in Minuteman National Park in Concord, MA and then I am going to go to the Red Sox game and then I am going to watch a bit of the Boston Marathon and then I will still be home before dinner.

And then every year I forget all about it until I wake up and realize it is Patriots Day again and I forgot about all of it. Oh well.

So the Pope died on Easter Sunday, eh? Wouldn’t it have been more on brand if he had died on Good Friday? Sorry… too soon?

I can’t help but be flippant about everything on Earth today. On top of the continuing collapse of American Democracy, I watched season two episode two of The Last of Us last night and it absolutely destroyed me. I knew from talking to a gamer player a few years ago that last night’s twist was coming, but I didn’t know when. I figured it would be late in the season, maybe in the finale. Nope. Episode two. On top of the twist, the whole thing going on in the town (no spoilers!) was maybe the most intense episode of television I’ve ever sat through. Damn. Just… damn.

In an attempt to calm myself down after watching that show last night, here’s a cat.

That didn’t fix me so here’s another cat.

  10. alright, in re: this week's poll

Patriot's Day - singular posessive - is the official #Maine usage since 1907.

Patriots - no apostrophe - is the usage for the title of the 2016 movie.

Plural Possessive apostrophe after S implies that there's more than one patriot celebrated, and is the Official usage for #Massachusetts

Reading into this, English is crazy. #PatriotsDay

  11. We're watching #PatriotsDay. Mark Wahlberg always freaks me out. When he's good, he's so fucking good (Boogie Nights,, Ted, this), but then he is capable of being truly terrible too (all that Transformers garbage, The Happening), with no middle ground

  12. The Red Sox played the annual Patriots Day/Boston Marathon Monday 11:00am game today. Morning baseball, everyone!

I always enjoy listening to the Marathon Monday game on the radio while I’m at work. I don’t know why, it’s just something I particularly like to do. Today’s game was tough for a bunch of reasons. I had a whole pile of meetings on my calendar, but there were breaks during game time so it was okay. In the end the Red Sox lost to Cleveland. It was close through most of the game but once The Guardians started hitting it was painful. Lots of defensive screw ups for the Red Sox, including two players crashing into each other hard enough to draw blood. Ouch.

Those aren’t the worst parts of the game though. The worst part was the radio broadcast. As soon as I logged onto the MLB app and brought up the audio I wanted to yell at WEEI and shut it off. I didn’t, but I should have. The radio announcing team included Sean McDonough. I fucking hate Sean McDonough. He used to do Red Sox TV broadcasts years and years ago (before getting the job doing Monday Night Football? Was that really a thing?) and he sucked to high heaven. I hated every single syllable that came out of his asshole of a mouth. Ugh, I fucking hate that guy! I’d rather listen to a baby crying at 100 decibels for three hours than listen to that prick call a game.

I listened to the game though. I didn’t let that butt munch ruin my Patriots Day. Screw that guy. The team losing was just fitting though. Yeah, screw that guy.

  13. Probably a perennial #Patriotsday game question: are the pitchers really on today or are the hitters half-asleep? #redsox #baseball #mlb

  14. On Patriots Day in Massachusetts, the Boston Red Sox play a morning game, which starts at 11:00am. It’s timed so that the fans will exit Fenway Park just about the same time the Boston Marathon reaches Kenmore Square. It’s a great little mini-tradition, and I always enjoy listening to the Sox game on the radio while I work.

Today’s haiku for you is the story of how WEEI and the Red Sox ruined it for me today.

    Turn on the Sox game
    and hear Sean McDonough’s voice.
    Fucking hate that guy.

  15. In the meantime I'm currently waiting patiently for the #MarathonMonday #PatriotsDay #RedSox game to start shortly, so not everything is bad.

  16. The sun rose, British marched up, the shot heard round the world was fired, the tyrannical king’s troops marched off, and I went to the pancake breakfast.

This is the real way to mark #PatriotsDay (at least in Lexington, MA, where the revolution began)

  17. Paul Revere arrives on horseback to call the colonists to arms! #arlingtonma #patriotsday

  18. My wife works for an MA-based company and gets off Patriots Day, while I do not. This was always a time of gloating for her. But it turns out having a kid (usually) in daycare completely flips that equation! #PatriotsDay
