  1. #westernmasselectronics is in 45 minutes (7:30 PM) at The Quarters in Hadley, MA! I’ve got a really neat, chaotic, hypnotic patch to share that’s part analog, part digital, part Gamelan samples, all mediated by my #ObliquePalette !

Yeah, the end product of ABS is amazing (see: LEGO, Gunpla) but I hate, eg, 3D printing it.

Been thinking what to do for the #ObliquePalette case. I’m not gonna shoot my own, but I want to explore less horrible materials.

(BTW, that 3D mouse eats a poopy butt. They somehow went way out of their way to make it act like not a keyboard so all the little buttons require long-dead software to configure.)

  5. Having this espresso cup right next to my 3D mouse has been messing with me all day.

Fortunately, I put it here after finishing the coffee, so at least I wasn’t sticking my fingers in espresso while trying to move around the model.

  7. God damn, this is fun.

This is the case of an #ObliquePalette, a hardware interface to #plugdata, with the intention of building a cyberdeck for making computer art in the broadest sense of the word.

It has eight outputs along the top that can output a control voltage of 0 to 5 volts as well as pulse width modulated signal to control servos.

The bottom row of inputs can be manual control or voltage control meaning you can improvise all sorts of input devices.

  8. #westernmasselectronics is back after being slushed out last month!

Third Entity is great. Groovebox jam full of samples and insightful parody.

I'll be playing, too, probably workshopping my current instrument, a #plugdata patch controlled by an #ObliquePalette to control overlapping samples, building extremely complex timbres that encourage auditory hallucination.

You should come! March 29 at The Quarters in Hadley, MA!

  9. You got into #computers because something in it spoke to you. You see a computer monitor as a window into a world of unexplored possibilities.

I'm designing & building a computer that is just for exploring possibilities. It's for art, not for making bosses richer. I'll sell it because that's how it works in our socioeconomic universe, but it's there to share.

Computers are for fucking around, making art, and falling in love.

  10. Knocked an item off the #ObliquePalette to do list: auto polling to figure out where it is on the USB bus!

Now, weirdly, it finds it, then SOMETIMES connects, and SOMETIMES drops from its usual sample rate of ~700Hz down to ~3Hz.

I'm pretty confident that I put some sort of "check to see if I'm already connected" logic into the #plugdata patch in the wrong place, but there's nothing as frustrating as an intermittent error, so right now it's working great because I'm trying to find the bug.

  11. (This is me mourning the end of the era in which I grew up, when we dreamed of a better future; when kids learned Logo or BASIC or HTML so they could invent new kinds of creativity and problem solving for the sake of a just world.

And it’s a celebration that the #ObliquePalette is working so well that having a hard time taking a break from making #eurorack computer art to increase sample rate, integrate onboard computation, and correct resistor values.) #retrocomputing

  12. I’m kind of excited that the #ObliquePalette is working reliably. It’s time to start packing more information into the packets to bring up the sample rate!

  13. let it snow
    without ice

40 minutes of analog-controlled samples, using an #ObliquePalette to control pitch and crossfade of two banks of samples.

Made to give you opportunities to hallucinate with your ears.

Listen with headphones if you can.

  14. Just made a recording I’m really proud of. I’m really enjoying being able to explore the analog inputs that the #ObliquePalette gives me in #plugdata .

I haven’t hooked them up to external modular gear yet. That’s next.

Still gotta optimize for sample rate, but it’s already fun to play with!

Shown: me playing it with #westernmasselectronics last week! Recording is coming, but the track I just did is basically the same as my set that night, but 3x the length and with a few refinements.

  15. This patch I built to use with the #ObliquePalette is fuckin blowing my mind. I’m getting really excited to share it next Wednesday at #westernmasselectronics ! Come get stoned on sounds with me! 8-10!

  16. I’ve been making music all day with my #ObliquePalette in preparation for my set with #westernmasselectronics a week from Wednesday!

Looking forward to an open jam session afterward.

I love plugging our shit into each other’s shit and jamming around a common CV theme.

  17. Today, I got past the mysterious technical problem I’ve been having with the #ObliquePalette and I’m back to building a creative technology out of and for the propagation of hope.

The Oblique Palette asserts that computers are for you to explore new regions of human creativity.

Livepatch in #plugdata. Control with weird controllers or
    #eurorack modules.

Send out sound or CV from your patch to other modules and your mad science electronics.

Make it dance with the servo outputs.

  18. Ringing in the new year by overcoming demoralization on coding for the #ObliquePalette . I put it down for a while and let the back of my mind chew on the problem, since highly experienced people were also stumped.

So, I'm letting one of the RP2040 cores do all the communication while the other core actually does analog/digital conversion in various ways. I'm hoping that what was going on is that they were somehow blocking each other.

Ironically, I took this feature out months ago.🤷🏻‍♀️

  19. Good lord, I'm having a bizarre, persistent problem with the #ObliquePalette.
In MacOS, it works fine, but it has a terrible sample rate of ~44Hz.

In Linux (Ubuntu on a Dell 2-in-1), it has a sample rate of ~350Hz! But then, a random number of seconds later (1 to 60 seconds in my experience) it suddenly stops communicating altogether.

The randomness makes me think it's an electronic problem. Capacitance somewhere. Maybe the lower sample rate keeps the capacitance from filtering signal?

  20. I went to take a picture of the back of the #ObliquePalette prototype 0.5.5 and it came out like this. So I gotta share.

The front, in the second image shows the inputs & outputs. Analog knobs, 3.5mm jacks for Eurorack, pin headers for Arduino (or other electronics) & servos.

(It's for turning computers into machines for making art, fucking around, and falling in love. You talk with it using the extremely powerful graphical language, #plugdata.)

  21. Hoolleee shitballs. The #ObliquePalette might be feature complete.

    8 analog in.

    8 analog out.

A hardware #plugdata object you program graphically.

(thanks to @ArchiteuthisFlux& the Jumperless krewe for finding the hardware bug!)

I can now control #plugdata software patches with #modularsynth CV or by twisting a knob — and the patch can control hardware with control voltages or by twisting a servo!

  22. Prototype 0.5.5 of the #ObliquePalette is in! I’m 75% sure it’ll work, though I’m hunting a comms bug in the firmware.

The honorary bit portrait on this one is Susan Kare, the original graphic designer of the Macintosh, creator of the I-beam and finger cursors, little house for representing “home” in HyperCard — the direct ancestor of the Web —and so many icons we take for granted now.

It’s just barely possible that I will have voltage control of and by #plugdata this weekend!

  23. Phew! #ObliquePalette prototype 0.5.5 (the ninth prototype in two years — one of them wasn’t built because we found a catastrophic error last moment) looks to be ready for manufacturing! Things could actually be correct here!

Really looking forward to teaching #programming and #sounddesign and #computerart with Oblique technologies! I want to see what patches people integrate into their #eurorack rigs! I want to see robots & environmental control!

  24. Servos are working, but as Septic Snake predicted, they starve the board of power immediately and we have to do something about that. #ObliquePalette

  25. I am always happy to learn that I haven’t broken my project.

This is the third of three #ObliquePalette s that now exist!

There is an electronic problem when driving servos that has to be solved with an external power supply, but other issues seem to be all software and firmware!

  26. First tests of #ObliquePalette 0.5.4 are promising! There was a weirdly missing Vcc and GND line which were easily jumped.

Soldered up input and output channels 1 to test, and got some weird results!

  27. I already had to solder in two jumpers to power the multiplexer. It looks like an automatic cleanup took out those traces and I didn’t notice.

Maybe the multiplexer address traces got lost at the same time?

  28. It’s pretty, and it’s progress, but it ain’t right!

The channels of the #ObliquePalette are allocated wrong. Some of this could be a firmware issue, which is easy enough to address. But it also looks like there might be missing traces on the PCB, which I can test with more jumpers.

  29. The #ObliquePalette 0.5.4 is on my workbench!

Fingers crossed that errors are small and easy to track down!

There looked to be errors in KiCAD that…don’t actually seem to be on the board? I hope that’s true!

Fingers crossed for #modularsynth control of a #plugdata patch and the patch being able to turn that back around to control servos, #synthdiy , #eurorack , or other #experimentalart & #robotics things by the weekend!
