  1. CW: mention of Nazis killing people in WWII

A couple of weeks ago NPR Music (which I love and subscribe to) had a bonus episode for paid subscribers discussing The Ramones' Blitzkrieg Bop. It was a good episode... except that they dodged discussion of any of the political implications of the song's lyrics. They had a "Ramones sang about political topics" take, but otherwise their approach to the song's content was that it represented teenagers lining up to see punk bands or something like that.

It's not just "bop," it's Blitzkrieg bop. Yes, there's content about kids lining up and getting in cars, but... the damn chorus:

    Hey ho, let's go
Shoot 'em in the back now
What they want, I don't know
They're all revved up and ready to go

I don't think they're singing about shooting music fans who are waiting in line for shows. I hear early Brownshirt bullshit, if mixed with observations about music fans. It's not just the chorus, either: The kids piling into cars and lining up are arguably ambiguous references, too. Before the SS became a serious thing the Brownshirts rounded up Jews (and other "undesirables") and piled them into cars and trucks, lined them up in the forest, and literally shot them in the back, to be buried in mass graves. This practice would later evolve into the production line mass murder of the concentration camps.

The Ramones were perhaps politically ambiguous (one of them was famously right-wing), but they definitely sang about political issues, sometimes with incisive lyrics (e.g., The KKK Took My Baby Away, about a Black woman being abducted in North Carolina).

@nprmusic does not usually dodge politics so completely. They pussyfoot around them a bit, which I think I understand, but this seemed odd.

Lest anyone have illusions about my motivations: listen to NPR Music podcasts. They are awesome. This little thing, which I think is an oversight, should not dissuade you.

  2. @skullvalanche @jake4480 The #NPRmusic people dropped it sometime last year. It comes up in my playlists since then, and when I forget what it sounds like, the sudden scream-metal always delights me.

  3. I know almost nothing about Lana del Rey, maybe because I'm not 25. This song is a groove, a total earworm for me. The lyrics are refreshing in some ways: a pure celebration of love without a dark twist or ominous undercurrent. Apparently (thanks, #NPRmusic) Ms. del Rey has caught some flak for choosing to do take a fairly hegemonic/traditional wife-type role in her marriage (I think this is about her husband). The fourth-wave (?) response is that women can be who they want to be, so she can be this. But this better not be some MAGA-adjacent #tradwife bullshit. I would find that very disappointing because I really like the song.

Aside: is song.link all crowdourced? I found so many songs there for a couple of years that I assumed it was running on code scraping songs from all over. In the past half year or so, however, I've found very few of the songs I've looked for. I finally noticed that you can post a YouTube, Spotify, etc. URL yourself.

  4. It's amazing to see Mustafa, a talented Sudanese Canadian artist, on NPR's Tiny Desk! Absolutely beautiful performance #tinydesk #nprmusic @nprmusic youtube.com/watch?v=9MToQNYuU2Q

  5. It's hard to believe (and ageing to admit) that it's been over 25 years since The Magnetic Fields released "69 Love Songs". The original lineup played NPR's Tiny Desk last year.
