  1. From: Rick Eyre on Cricket

Another great yarn from Adam Burnett. How the memory of the legendary fast bowler Eddie Gilbert is being revived to introduce cricket to the kids and families of Queensland's remote Indigenous communities. cricket.com.au/news/4054092/qu #cricket #NAIDOCWeek

  2. We are excited to release the latest video from our First Nations Elders Oral History Project in time for NAIDOC Week. Following her first performance in Brisbane at the age of 17, Wilma Reading would be propelled to stardom from the 1960s to the 1980s, with the Cairns-born singer touring the world, performing with Duke Ellington, and becoming the first-ever Australian guest on the Johnny Carson Show.

Wilma was inducted into the National Indigenous Music Awards Hall of Fame in 2019 and continues to be very involved in the local music community, providing inspiration to First Nations musicians to follow their dreams. 7. As #NAIDOCWeek ends I'm sharing @brendanbeebee's post about Melbournian radio show Between The Bars (mastodon.social/@brendanbeebee) as a reminder that First #Australians' battles and #oppression will continue like a chronic, debilitating #illness -- unless we rise and do what we can to effect #change.

We can, for instance, #lobby our #government to lower #Aboriginal deaths in custody, improve #Indigenous peoples' access to #healthcare and #education, and #protect #sacred sites.

  8. Learn more about this unique skink, and the efforts to conserve it: ausgeo.co/tjakura 🦎

Have you heard of the Tjakuṟa? Also known as the great desert skink, this species is not only special for its beautiful sunset colours and unique family units and burrows – it is also an important Tjukurrpa (Creation) animal for many Indigenous desert communities.

The Tjakuṟa is facing a difficult battle for survival, but thankfully, Indigenous rangers across the Australian desert have joined forces with Resilient Landscapes Hub and Indigenous Desert Alliance to protect the iconic species.

  27. It's #NAIDOCWeek !

At work we're keeping it fairly simple; sharing information about the history of NAIDOC and telling people how they can get involved. We're also having a fun online quiz on Friday during lunch to compete with our colleagues to see how much we know about the history of NAIDOC.

As a music fan, I've found myself listening to more #FirstNations music as a way to connect with the traditional owners of the land.

    Some of my picks:

'Nyaaringu' by Miiesha might be a few years old but is still a great album that I soaked up late last week - open.spotify.com/album/4FPYLkP

And GLVES is a fantastic artist who has released a collection of well-produced singles over the last few years; she's going from strength to strength - open.spotify.com/artist/7wRaOh

And every now and then I'll skim through past episodes of Blak Out on #TripleJ to find new artists - hearing it in a radio show context adds an extra layer to the stories that First Nations cultures often include in their music - abc.net.au/triplej/programs/bl

  28. A little weekend reading that be of interest to some folks on here, Statements from the Soul: The Moral Case for the Uluru Statement from the Heart. It's a collection of essays from a broad range of faith leaders from lots of different traditions and religions reflecting on the Uluru Statement and the journey to this year's referendum on the Voice. #AusPol #NAIDOC #NAIDOCWeek #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe #Yes

  29. CW: NAIDOC WEEK.

To all my First Nations friends I send you enduring love and strength during NAIDOC week and apologise for the months of silence and lack of support throughout the rest of the year.

I am thankful to be a resident on the lands of the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation and recognise that this land has never been ceded which is an enduring crime of white colonisers. White colonisers like myself must do better.

There is a link in my recent essay that I would like to share with other white people. It is an interview by Angelita Biscotti with Muruwuri man and investigative journalist, Allan Clarke.

National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year, to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth.
