I continue to reflect on the contrast between the #fediverse and #Facebook / #Twitter & how the #TwitterMigration / #MoveToMastodon may usher in a new era. Allow me to fantasize: Abandoning closed, profit-driven hierarchical networks in favor of open, community-run spaces is the start of saving humanity. I am writing #solarpunk & positive ideas for the future. The dystopian science fiction stories I grew up loving have not seemed to serve as dire warnings & look more like 1:1 accurate scale blueprints being followed! The prospects of a functioning, egalitarian future now seem so far-fetched that even #StarTrek has gone bleak. I think there’s room for & a need for more hope. And I want to imagine it in very practical & specific ways. So, it sounds like I have to write a story. The tricky part is getting from here to there. Specifically in the story I have in mind, I don’t want to oversimplify. I don’t want to be a polyanna. The premise is that we have the ability to be connected to anywhere & anyone in the world. What’s preventing that connectivity from uniting humanity are hierarchical networks. Control over the flow of information, for profit, turns care into a scarce resource.* We’re currently experiencing the worst effects of interconnectivity — “Our informational networks give us the omniscience of God without any omnipotence to go with it” (in the words of Barbara Brown Taylor on On Being this week)[https://onbeing.org/programs/barbara-brown-taylor-this-hunger-for-holiness/]. Far from omnipotence, the most popular networks are actually disempowering to their users. (They are greatly empowering to those who command them.) Closed, proprietary communication networks are disempowering in every moment of sharing. All the material I have ever put onto those websites over the years feels disposable (already disposed of, actually). Yes I believe I can download a record in some bizarre file format that I’d probably never navigate, but essentially the purpose of all the creativity I have poured online is to enrich the owners of those sites. Obviously the sites enable conversations, but only to the extent that there is audience capture. Humans can speak in other ways without enriching malign entities; and open source communications forums allow for greater flexibility. Here, our words feel more ours. Leaving closed forums for open ones is a valuable step to greater #democracy, understanding, #solidarity, organization. In that future the omniscience of our universal information networks gets paired with the omnipotence of empowering every human on Earth.
