  1. Major upgrade at the Westport Observatory — made possible by Gault Family Companies, who covered 50% of our new mini-split systems plus installation! 🙌 We're saying goodbye to inefficient resistive heating and hello to serious energy savings on our $600+/month electric bills. A huge thank you to the Gault team for their professionalism, and to our amazing members for making it happen! 💙

  6. Our #minisplit #HeatPump outdoor unit in the snow. Heats (and in summer cools) the upper floor of our house. Seems to be doing OK so far with 20° F (-6.7° C) at night.

  10. Realized that my mini-split installation might be weird because of the trailer wall curvature. Tried researching if it was OK to mount the interior evaporator/fan unit at an angle without luck. Would seem to be fine, but reached out to an HVAC guy in the Festiva Group to double check.

Nope. Needs to be as close to 90 degrees as possible or better yet angled back a little. The refrigerant doesn't care, but there will be condensation that needs to drain.

Guess I'll have to build a frame for it that compensates for the wall curvature.

  15. After two winters of heating my backyard greenhouse (tropical plants) with fan blown electric resistance heating (read: electric space heater), I'm looking for a more efficient method.

I see others using methane or propane, but, yuck and I don't want to cause an explosion.

I haven't seen examples of people doing it, but would it be possible to wire up a 120v mini split?

  25. Does anyone have recommends for book or website I can use to educate myself on options for upgrading a postwar bungalow from a gas furnace + AC to heat pump(s)? The book I have is OK for basic principles but I’m looking for more what units are available, cost, installation pitfalls.

I have asthma which is aggravated by the current system blowing dust around summer + winter. Primary motivation is comfort, better energy efficiency would be bonus points. #HVAC #HeatPump #minisplit #renovation

  30. Last fall, I installed a #Turbro #MiniSplit #HeatPump from #HomeDepot in the back yard shed we call the "MicroBarn". Read the Alt Txt - that's where the story is. But this is about #Histeresis and failure to exploit it.

  35. Allyson Chiu: Why you shouldn’t buy a basic window AC unit: A basic window unit is typically cheaper than other models and relatively easy to install, but they guzzle energy and can contribute to emissions.

"With temperatures climbing into the triple digits, running out to buy a window air-conditioning unit might seem like a simple way to beat the heat.

But while these air conditioners can help keep you cool, experts say you should consider other options."

"A basic window unit typically has a lower initial cost than other models and is relatively easy to install, but they guzzle energy, straining electricity grids, and can contribute to the planet-warming emissions driving extreme heat."

A third problem with AC in an upstairs bedroom is that you can't predict how the temperature will “bounce” up if you turn it off.

    “Comfy Mode” allows on/off parameters.

I set the thermostat on Dry Mode to 66, but comfy mode is going to turn the unit off if it gets under 68. If it goes over 69, Comfy Mode on Cielo goes back on. That protects from waking up hot if it bounces. And it won't cycle on/off a whole lot, not nearly as bad as the scrolling near the set point
