Looks like #JanetMills wants to stay in power as Senator Mills. She's been changing her tune on #IndigenousSovereignty and now this?
#Maine Governor backs #MillionaireTax, flipping from prior stance
By Greg Ryan Bloomberg,Updated April 2, 2026
"Maine Governor Janet Mills now supports increasing taxes on the state’s richest residents, reversing her past opposition after lagging in recent polls for a key Democratic Senate primary.
"Mills on Thursday endorsed a millionaire tax included in a budget proposal that passed a committee for the Democrat-controlled legislature. She vetoed a similar increase in 2024 and maintained that such a measure was short-sighted in an interview just a few weeks ago.
"Mills’ flip-flop comes as the 78-year-old trails political newcomer #GrahamPlatner in their contest to be the Democratic nominee to take on Republican #UselessSusanCollins in November. Platner, a 41-year-old oyster farmer, has called for higher taxes on the rich."

Zohran Mamdani, New York’s new mayor, wants to tax the super-rich to fund his policies. Similar debates on taxing the rich are playing out in cities across the world. Do some cities attract more of the ultra-rich than others? And are low taxes really the key as some claim? Today’s Number Theory explores this.

These Democrats opposed taxing #millionaires to fund schools
by Channa Steinmetz , June 13, 2025
"A proposal for an income tax surcharge on Mainers with the highest incomes, to fund public education, failed in the #Maine Senate by just one vote — and three Democratic lawmakers were among those who opposed it. This happened just one day after the bill also failed to pass in the House of Representative by two votes with six Democrats voting against it. The bill is currently being held in the Senate, as it may be reconsidered.
"The bill, #LD1098, would add a 2% surtax on individual income over $1 million and household income over $2 million. The tax would generate more than $50 million annually for education funding.
"Thursday’s final Senate vote was 17 in favor and 18 opposed. Democrats #JillDuson of Cumberland, #TeresaPierce of Cumberland, and #CraigHickman of Kennebec voted no.
"In the House, the vote was 70 in favor and 72 opposed. Democrats #AllisonHepler of Woolwich, #HollySargent of York, #ChristinMitchell of Cumberland, #DaniOHalloran of Brewer, #TiffanyRoberts of South Berwick, and #WalterGerardRunte of York all voted no.
"Currently, someone earning $1 million pays the same percentage of their income in taxes as someone earning $61,000, which advocates point out leaves tens of millions in potential revenue untapped.
"In voting against the bill, the Senators were going against popular opinion on such a tax: polling from the Maine People’s Resource Center (which is affiliated with #MainePeoplesAlliance, of which Beacon is a project) found that 81% of Maine voters support increasing taxes on income over $1 million. Supporters included 65% of Republicans and 65% of voters who identify as 'very conservative'.
"Maine Center for Economic Policy tax analyst Maura Pillsbury previously called LD 1098 a necessary step. 'The programs families rely on are under threat because our tax code asks too little of those at the top — and LD 1089 starts to fix that,' she said. 'The public is ready. The math works.'
"Maine lawmakers did pass two major tax reform bills yesterday that now head to Gov. #JanetMills, who has previously opposed similar efforts. #LD229 would restructure Maine’s income tax system by expanding from three to five brackets and adding higher rates of 7.75% and 8.95% for top earners.
"The second bill, #LD1879, raises the top #corporate tax rate to 10% on income over $3.5 million starting in 2026, with new revenue earmarked for #agricultural and economic #resilience programs. Despite initial disagreement between the chambers, the Senate ultimately reversed its stance and voted to agree with the House."

Raise taxes on #Maine’s wealthy? Some of them are OK with that
An added 4% tax on incomes over $1 million and capital gains over $250,000 could generate more than $200 million in annual revenue for the state, according to estimates provided to lawmakers.
by Randy Billings, Posted March 26. 2025
Excerpt:
"Libby Delucia-Harting traveled from her home in Portland to the State House in Augusta on Wednesday with an unusual request for lawmakers." 'I want to talk about my wealth to highlight the importance of taxing people like me,' Delucia-Harting said, telling lawmakers that she inherited wealth accumulated by her great-grandfather and protected through generations by using tax loopholes.
"Delucia-Harting was among a group of wealthy residents and progressive advocates who testified in support of two bills to increase taxes on millionaires and those whose wealth earns them more wealth — a move that could generate more than $200 million a year at a time when state officials are considering budget cuts and deficits in the state’s #Medicaid program.
"Proponents say that increasing taxes on Maine’s wealthiest residents would help protect important investments in education, child care and health care, while opponents argue it would only cause wealthy residents and businesses to leave the state or not come here at all."

#MillionaireTax That Inspired #Mamdani Fuels $5.7 Billion Haul in #Massachusetts
By Greg Ryan
October 21, 2025Excerpt: "Boston Mayor #MichelleWu — whom Mamdani has called a role model — recently chastised executives for complaining about the tax. She contends that the region’s talent pool and livability are more important to its economic competitiveness.
"Many high-income taxpayers are staying in the Boston area despite the tax hike."

Apparently, some millionaires moved out of the state. Imagine what would happen if EVERY state (and country) TAXED THE RICH PROPORTIONALLY!
#Massachusetts - Here’s how much the new ‘#MillionairesTax’ has raised this year (it’s a lot)
The tax on the rich is bringing in more than expected and will fund transportation and education initiatives.
By Beth Treffeisen
May 21, 2024"The '#MillionairesTax,' which went into effect for the first time last year, is set to bring in billions.
"State officials announced Monday that the surtax on high earners had generated more than $1.8 billion in revenue this fiscal year, with three months left to go, according to the State House News Service.
"This means state officials could have millions of dollars to spend on transportation and education initiatives.
"Any additional money raised beyond the $1 billion already budgeted would go to a reserve account, where state policymakers can ask for one-time investments in projects or programs.
"The SHNS reported that the revenue from the tax is already $800 million more than the Legislature and Gov. #MauraHealey planned to spend in surtax revenue for all of the fiscal year 2024.
"The Department of Revenue won’t certify the official amount raised until later this year.
"However, the estimates supported claims that the surtax would generate significant revenue for the state, despite fears that it would drive out some of its wealthiest residents.
"In 2022, voters approved the ballot initiative that levies an additional 4 percent tax on annual earnings over $1 million.
" 'Opponents of the Fair Share Amendment claimed that multi-millionaires would flee Massachusetts rather than pay the new tax, and they are being proven wrong every day,' Andrew Farnitano, a spokesperson for #RaiseUpMassachusetts, the union-backed group that pushed the 2022 ballot initiative, told the Boston Globe.
" 'With this money from the #UltraRich, we can do even more to improve our public #schools and #colleges, invest in roads, bridges, and #PublicTransit, and start building an economy that works for everyone,' Farnitano said.
"But Massachusetts has struggled with residents leaving the state recently, taking their taxable income with them.
"The announcement from the latest DOR quarterly report, described during Senate proceedings, is welcome news for budget writers who had been seeing declines in tax revenues for months.
"State tax collections have lagged behind projections for most of the 2024 fiscal year, SHNS reported, even after Healey implemented spending cuts.
"According to an analysis by the Pioneer Institute, Massachusetts lost $4.3 billion in adjusted gross income in 2021, 40 percent more than the prior year. The data shows that nearly 25,200 more tax filers had moved out of the state than moved in."

“People are angry [about the millionaire tax]. They feel like they’ve done a lot for Massachusetts and they’re not being rewarded and respected for what they’ve done.”
They are SO right. We takers should carry 100% of the tax burden, and actually make payments in gratitude to the makers.
