I think it's unlikely that I'll use qwk files and rep files in any serious fashion, but ...
I think I'll probably maintain the script to generate the qwk files and to process the rep files as the rest of the project advances, because it means that I can run any qwk compatible mail client on my old windows and DOS boxes, and probably even a palmOS device, and interact with the network.
Maybe run a LAN telnet server, so devices can dial in with an esp32 modem?
Heck, it means I could use a palm device to do a full carrier pigeon sync, I bet.
(This is well beyond the scope of the #mBBS project, but it's cute and I made it work and I like it so I might just keep doing it.)
-
Stayed up until nearly midnight hacking on my #mBBS code.
I realized I was about to try to reinvent the wheel on a long solved problem, so instead I grabbed a piece of software first released in 1996 (multimail), made like four small tweaks to my server scripts, and ended up with a fully functional offline client for text posts.
I dunno if I'll actually ship it using qwk archives, but ... I could!
It works. I can write posts and read posts and the qwk and rep files are all processed correctly.
I even implemented a quick cross-server sync using rep files.
This bypasses the key/hash based authn stuff I was doing, but I wasn't doing it very well (and I could easily hack it into the qwk file format, and into mm I guess if I wanted to really go over the top.)

@DoctorDeathray I just finished scoring the next episode of the Houdini serial I'm releasing next week.
I'm about to start editing the next episode of Expedition Sasquatch which also gets released next week.
Then I'm going to record some bits for @jandrews for the episode of Jupiter's Ghost releasing this month, and just generally start writing/recording/assembling some other bits for Jupiter's Ghost to be released in the coming weeks.
I'm working on a Jupiter's Ghost novella too, but I don't know if it will ever see the light of day.
At some point I have to start filming this weeks news for #NewEllijayTelevision, it's a big one, between the fire in blue ridge, the escaped kangaroo, Open enrollment, and Kissinger.
I'm working on #aurelisles today. I might put some more time in to the #mBBS today. We're trying to blend up a new espresso roast for the coffee shop. Our latest attempt was close, but didn't hit the mark.
-
@silverwizard if you search my handle and the phrase modern bbs you'll find a blog post or three, but they're old. Or look at #mbbs maybe.
Basically, circa 2015, I was running a pirate box install on the LAN at our record store, and I had our little lan services federating with other LANs and it was cute.
But it had some fundamental flaws because of the way phones handle LANs without internet, and because of the interconnect tech we were using.
I wrote about the history. I wrote about the possibilities. I met some people. I got a job. The project went on the shelf for half a decade.
Now I have some lora radios on the way, and I'm going to try again, starting with the model used by Community Memory.
-
I'm talking about my modern BBS project ( #mBBS)
I'm trying to conceptualize what it might look like in practice.
I have come up with a metaphor:
Think of the internet as Cable Television.
What would the OTA/Free TV equivalent for computer networks look like?
-
This is a thread from 2020 where I revisted the #mbbs idea shortly before we were able to open the makerspace.
Most of what I was talking about here, I had to leave by the side of the road while we bootstrapped the makerspace.
"Disaster Radio" appears to have evolved in to meshtastic, which is what I was talking about earlier today.
-
So yeah, I've been thinking (and that's not good for anyone and everyone should be holding their breath.)
-
CW: Silicon Valley (HBO)
I mean, he wants to do it with compression tech, which fine whatever.
But the basic idea of a mesh networked, peer to peer, store and forward comms platform that operates in an entirely serverless fashion?
That's #mBBS.
-
@ajroach42 Have you made intersting progress with #mbbs already, BTW?
-
@ajroach42 Followed the #mBBS hashtag to some posts on your blog. You and I are definitely interested in some similar things. (I ran a #BBS back in the day, on both #FidoNet and #UUCP, so this stuff all rings true). If you ever used UUCP, NNCP is basically modern UUCP... or sort of UUCP+ssh+tor in a way. It's the ssh of async, a generic building block. Heck, you can nncp-exec to sh if you really want, maybe with a little wrapper to send you back your results.
-
Yeah, both syncthing and nncp have a requirement to explicitly add new machines.
I can think of a few ways that this kind of certificate/authentication management would be super annoying, but that's what support software is for. This is the #mBBS equivalent of a DNS registrar.
Requiring node operators to authenticate their transport peers is probably excessive in a world in which all the transported data is e2ee, but it's also probably fine.
-
@jgoerzen I appreciate you sharing, and the detailed answer. You've got some great tips in there.
I have traditionally approached this problem from another direction entirely (that is to say, how to link up a bunch of servers with no dedicated network infra between them) rather than focusing on specific usecases.
I think a combination of syncthing and NNCP will get me to where I want to be, and even allow me to do the #mBBS thing the way I want to do it, instead of the bad way we do it now.
-
If I can figure out a reliable long range mesh networking solution that can be deployed for less than $50/node and works with commodity hardware and linux, I could bootstrap a community message board or a community wide intranet.
I feel like I'm having this conversation every three weeks, but I'm actually in a position to act on it now.
So let's talk about #meshnetworking and #mbbs and #alternet internet replacement ideas.
What hardware exists right now? What software? (I'll thread some.)
-
CW: ESP8266 messenger
Coupled with that software I talked about in my other #mBBS thread that doesn't exist yet and you've got 'email' and 'blog' and 'forum' support.
(and, of course, nothing says that these things have to use ESP8266s. They could just exist on the internet.
But I'm thinking about a time when I no longer trust the internet at all, instead of only mostly mistrusting it like I do now.
And if that time ever comes, we will need to have been ready already.)
-
CW: ESP8266 messenger
A lot of what I talk about and focus on WRT the new internet and my #mBBS project is very focused around using full computers or raspberry pis to emulate the way we interacted with an older system like a BBS or a mainframe or just the pre-web internet.
But the ESP8266 is so cheap, and way more powerful than a lot of folks realize. It has me thinking we could use it to create a new class of device, and a new kind of networked communication.
