i was so surprised and delighted to see BBSes, FidoNet, and MUDs/MUCKs get mentions in the anthropomorphic (furry) culture history documentary The Fandom (2020).

i always knew there was significant overlap between furry culture and networked computing, but i had never fully made the connection. it's so nice to see a real, non-corporate, grassroots culture grown through informal othernetworks. no wonder masto is so furry-rich!

@beejay wir waren einmal mit leuten auf dem #fidonet dort und ein anderes mal haben wir dort ein video gedreht https://youtu.be/F9q662ZKNIw - alle waren super sympatisch und wir denken es braucht solche orte in deutschland. darum wollten wir mit einem trailer helfen. bei der letzten museumsretteraktion in der pandemie hatten wir dies auch auf socials und im stream thematisiert. leider fehlt für diese bereiche staatliche förderung. da muss mal als #retrocommunity einfach zusammenhalten

Haven't read the Atlantic yet, but you are right. My third day poking around on Mastodon (via newsie.social server started for journalism pros, profs, etc.), having flashbacks to my 1980s exploring #Usenet, #fidonet #BBSs, #CompuServe, #thewell, #BIX, #Delphi and more.

Very curious about whether the Federated model will get average-person friendly enough in apps, installation and navigation for my non-geek FB neighbor groups, powerful as a local newspaper.
