Так уж сложилось, что именно эта тематика оказался слишком уж популярным на моём Хабре, и неразрывно связана со мной, хотя я всячески пытался "сбежать" от данной тематики. Однако я решил совместить приятное с полезным - рассказать про недавние мои поправки в NodehistJ , которые значительно ускорит индексацию диффов нодлистов сети Фидонет, а также значительно снизит потребление ОЗУ, за счёт одного из лучших вещей, которая есть в Spring Data JDBC - live streaming данных с СУБД без использования неэффективной пагинации. Данная технология позволяет быстро перебирать нодлисты за считанные минуты, и ускорить индексацию даже на слабых серверах, за счёт прямого перебора данных из СУБД, в live-режиме, без использования неэффективной пагинации, но с использованием самых обычного Java Streams.

after posting that "Eris-Free Net" wikipedia article the other day, it made me think about how to deal with misbehaving shards on tomoNet, and how governance works on decentralized networks.
when i started thinking about creating something like tomo years ago, i often thought about Ultima Online as - not so much a model for - but an example of a network of online communities that was always interesting and sometimes frustrating to deal with
in-game, for several years, UO really was the "wild west" of online communities - so much was left up to players to figure out. for a long time, there were no game mechanics that enabled players to enact governance of their own (e.g. creating towns, villages, provinces and local laws). the outcome of this was that most often a kind of hillbilly/frontier justice, or outright dog-eat-dog existence, became the norm.
this was great for player-killers and people who loved strife. it added some intensity to the game that no other game had, or in my view has ever had since. (WoW/EQ/etc all elected to bolt everything down and render the world in nerf).

BBSes also had governance-by-sysop/god, FidoNet with network coordinators, and USENET with its backbone cabal.
tomoNet - a network of tomo shards that agree to all swap groups/posts with one another - is going to have to deal with the question of (self-) governance sooner or later. at the moment, tomoBBS has no specific controls for managing defederation and it does *not* use the ActivityPub protocol. it needs some, and i need help thinking through what the options are, for a network based on NNTP.

Мне казалось, что рекомендации и правила описанные ниже всегда были очевидны и логичны для сотрудников ИТ-компаний. Но удручающая практика показывает, что есть масса людей, которые не задумывались и не смотрели со стороны на то, как они общаются с коллегами. Ведь чуть поднапрягшись, можно существенно улучшить эффективность взаимодействия с ними. Опытные разработчики всё это уже знают, но, зачастую, не молодёжь, не заставшая никаких средств общения кроме real-time IM-ов. А форсированный уход на удалёнку во время COVID, показал как не много людей (целых компаний!) способны эффективно работать без живого общения.

From somewhere around 1992 until somewhere around 1997, I ran a #BBS. Can still find old #FidoNet nodelists with me on there (tricky though, my name is spelt wrong!)
I had a number of paid/registered door games, including Usurper, LORD, Falcon's Eye, and Barren Realms Elite. The registration code for #LORD I still have had committed to memory.
What is surprising is that for all of the above, can still buy licenses (except #Usurper, which was GPL'd in 2010, a port can be found on github)?!?!

Today, 46 Years ago the first #bbs goes online.
On February 16th 1977 in Chicago (IL,USA) Ward
Christensen and Randy Suess are about to finishing the last steps before switching the #CBBS #online.The CBBS was the first Computerized #bulletin #board #system and would not only mark the Milestone for the Onlineage. It also allowed to invent and grow subcultures like the #demoscene. If your computer had a modem attached to it you could explore the world though it, since you're no longer physical bound to a location to do so.
In the upcoming years of #bbsing the #ansi char set would spark a whole #ArtScene that is still
present and activ today. The #ANSIart Scene. Even the exchange of text messages and files would break out of the local BBS. Tom Jennings created the #fidonet which was no less than a network that spans the world and allows the communication beyond all borders. -

You could also send commands to be run on a remote system, and you'd get an email with the result. #FidoNet also had its version of email and Usenet (discussion groups), called netmail and echomail. Technically, #UUCP was the protocol; the network of systems using it went by various names, such as UUCPnet or UUnet. 2/

Kommunikation – fast 40 Jahre später
Früher war alles anders. Nicht unbedingt besser, aber anders. Vor allem aber war die Kommunikation nicht omnipräsent und hyperschnell. Selbst elektronische Nachrichten hatten Laufzeiten, die nach Tagen und nicht nach Minuten oder sogar Sekunden bemessen wurden. Für mich war damals das FidoNet eine vollkommen neue Welt.

In einem Anflug von Irritation darüber, wie viele Menschen sich, wenn sie sich aufgrund der Twitterdämmerung nach anderen Orten im Netz umschauen, ohne mit den Wimpern zu zucken, wieder in die selben Abhängigkeiten begeben, ohne offene Schnittstellen, ohne Open-Source-Code, ohne Interoperabilität – ja, ich spreche hier von post.news und Hive und dergleichen mehr -, habe ich gestern Abend mal nach einer Zeitlinie der unterschiedlichen Plattformen und Systeme gesucht. Und weil ich bis auf diese schöne Grafik erst einmal nichts gefunden habe, habe ich dann »schnell mal eben« selbst eine Zeitlinie zusammengebastelt. Das gab rege Reaktionen (Debatte auf Mastodon hier und auf Twitter hier), und mir sind dabei drei Dinge klar geworden:
1. Soziale Netzwerke im weiteren Sinne sind keine ganz neue Erfindung, sondern begleiten als Mailinglisten, BBS-Systeme, als Usenet oder als Chat-Plattform wie IRC unsere vernetzte Computernutzung schon ziemlich lange.
2. Wenn ich mich näher damit befassen wollen würde, wäre es gut, für Ordnung zu sorgen und zu überlegen, was ich eigentlich meine, wenn ich von sozialen Netzwerken spreche. Was unterscheidet Twitter von Facebook, was Facebook von ICQ, und was ICQ von Google Groups? Und wie weit soll das eigentlich gefasst werden – sind Youtube, Tinder, Werkenntwen, StayFriends und LambdaMOO auch soziale Netzwerke?
3. Für die meisten sozialen Netzwerke (was auch immer darunter zu verstehen ist), sind die Anfangsdaten (erste Nutzung, wann wurde die Firma gegründet, wann kam das Produkt auf den Markt, …) gut dokumentiert, auch die Wikipedia ist hier sehr hilfreich. Viel weniger klar ist das Ende sozialer Netzwerke. Einige Dienste wurden eingestellt (Orkut zum Beispiel, oben grau dargestellt), andere scheinen auch heute noch zu existieren, sind aber aus der öffentlichen Wahrnehmung komplett verschwunden (FIDONet beispielsweise).
Was ich jetzt weiter mit diesem Impuls, zurück zu gucken, anfange, ist mir noch nicht ganz klar. Jedenfalls: es gab ein Leben vor Twitter, und es wird ein Leben nach Twitter geben. Bis dahin sammele ich mal weiter – etwas übersichtlicher als die Grafik oben hier bei Datawrapper. Tipps und Hinweise gerne in den Kommentaren.

My third day poking around on Mastodon (via newsie.social server started for journalism pros, profs, etc.), having flashbacks to my 1980s exploring #Usenet, #fidonet #BBSs, #CompuServe, #thewell, #BIX, #Delphi and more.Very curious about whether the Federated model will get average-person friendly enough in apps, installation and navigation for my non-geek FB neighbor groups, powerful as a local newspaper.
