Live and recent posts from across the Fediverse tagged #fidonet, aggregated by home.social.

  1. I'm running for local office in September. I'm way way down the ticket and won't get elected. But I just got email advising me on how to clean up my social media to avoid attacks from political opponents.

The main instruction is "Check through your posts starting with the first one".

That's many many posts a day.

Starting 31 years ago if #UseNet groups count.

Or 38 years ago if #FidoNet bulletin board systems count.

    Nope. 😄

  3. @Kristian_Kiehling
#SciFi #Unwiring is a collaborative story by IIRC #cstross and #CoryDoctorow about seeding a country with a network of wireless nodes.

#FidoNet was (is?) a decentralised message passing network in the modem age.
#CIX and the program for it #AMEOL2 also allowed a phone call to receive and pass many forum messages to read and compose at leisure.
There is an #RFC for IP traffic by #pigeon which is extreme, but packets could go by USB stick, QR code ...
    #Samizdat in #USSR

  7. I'm not done yet, but it's a start. I can't be bothered to automate it for this one-off 😉

  9. CW: Long thread/3

When I got on #Usenet shortly thereafter, the Unix Greybeard set never passed up an opportunity to tell us newcomers that the #Fidonet-Usenet bridge allowed the barbarian hordes to overwhelm their Athenian marketplace of ideas:

When I joined #TheWELL in the late 1980s, I was repeatedly assured that the good times were over, and that we would never see their like again:

  11. Hey, #fediverse how many exoduses from social media/forums/networks you experienced throughout your life?

    I’ll start:

    1. #fidonet to internet
(that’s due to internet becoming more accessible)
    2. #livejournal to nowhere (bad management decisions of SUP pissed off a lot of users at least in RU segment)
    3. #friendfeed to one of its successors. (FF closed by Facebook which bought it to get ownership of the “like” feature)
    4. #twittermigration (for obvious reasons).

    You?

  13. In the mid 80s I was trolling around looking for gigs deploying #Fidonet nodes as information/communications hubs for distributed organizations. #TorontoZoo was one interested party, they saw the value, but had no money.

Later, the Chatham Agricultural Exchange deployed Fidonet, and in response to my surprise at their progressive thinking, explained, "Farmers who don't own their own technology won't stay farmers very long."

Dezentrale Infrastruktur FTW.

Spannende Zeiten für einen 13-Jährigen. Bis dann die Festplatte crashte. #NoBackupNoMercy
