A very nicely done website celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Macintosh computer by restoring one.
"The notion of acquiring one for restoration, akin to reviving an old vintage car that no longer runs, intrigued me. The immediate allure of substantial cost savings persuaded me to delve deeper (unaware that I would eventually spend the equivalent of obtaining a fully operational unit in the ensuing months)."

A lot of people pointed out last week that the original Macintosh's inflation-adjusted price is over $7300. But I haven't seen anyone point out that the current base-model iMac is only $443 in 1984 dollars, and it's a heck of a lot more useful out of the box than the original Mac was. #apple #mac40th

I just realized I am wearing my Apple Mac socks for the 40th Anniversary. They're ugly. Behold. 🧦 Macs Orbiting the Sun. #SillySocks #Socks #Mac #mac40th

Alright, I'm jumping in. My first Mac was an LC 475. Humble beginnings, but somehow I was able to render 3D images using Ray Dream Designer!

TIL that the guy who played Big Brother in the 1984 #Macintosh ad:
1. Is still alive (he turns 99 this year), and
2. Was one of the original voices of the #Daleks (in the first Doctor era and also the two #PeterCushing feature films). -

My first Mac: I bought a PowerBook G4 in college so I could run apps like MATLAB locally via X11 (or stream them over the network) instead of using a thin client in a lab. I've had a Mac around ever since!

My first Mac was a 128K, later upgraded to a 512KE. I immediately got involved programming it - from Assembler to Basic to Pascal to C to HyperCard. It was awesome, and gave way to a large assortment of later Macs.

I'm seeing lots of posts about the Mac's 40th anniversary, with many pics of old Macs. I came across this old snap from ~2003. I think my assistant and I were laughing at how much stuff was on the desk, as the two of us worked on quite a big project.
There's a lot in here for the Mac geeks to spot!! (and yes... it continued hereafter 🙂)

So my own anodyne childhood memories of the mac paled in comparison to @danilo ’s moving tribute and I had to go back to the drawing board on this 40th anniversary post, so instead of that, please enjoy these spicy takes where I claim among other things that Steve Jobs wasn't really all that great at product design

I'm loving all these Mac posts. One thing I remember clearly from 1985 was setting up the first AppleTalk network in our office. It was like magic.

@lemay my first was the 128K in late 1984 and I've been buying them ever since. I was just thinking the other day that Apple should give me a free computer for our anniversary. I loved the clam shell iBook just for aesthetics. I don't want to think about how much money I've given to Apple.

My first Mac: We had a 512K fat mac when I was in high school. Not a 512KE; I think my mom said that it was store-upgraded from a 128K but I don't know if that was a thing.
My first real Mac was a MacPlus that I got for college. I kept that machine well into my 20s, and spray-painted it black at some point (hashtag #goth). I had a cat who liked to sleep on top of it, and when I took it apart to upgrade the memory it was full of cat hair. 😬

Happy 40th Anniversary, Macintosh! You’re one of the biggest dents ever made in the Universe. (You certainly changed MY life forever, for the better!)

happy 40th macintosh.
my first experience with a mac was a neighbour's Mac Plus in 1989. it was locked away in a utility room in his basement that only his parents had the key for. occasionally we were granted permission to play games on it. he had three games that changed my perception of computers: Dark Castle, StuntCopter, and Continuum.
despite having a Sega Master System at home, with colourful sprites and chiptunes, the Plus's high res graphics and digitized sound effects grabbed me instantly.
to this day, Dark Castle's pixel art sets a high bar for lighting and dithering in black and white.

Happy 40th birthday, #Macintosh 🎉 I just managed to get a copy of this book in hardback (at a sensible price) and even just the inside of the front cover is a joy to behold! 🥰 Here’s to the next 4 decades! #mac40 #Mac40th #Apple

On January 24th, 1984, during my lunch break from work, I drove to the computer shop across the street from the local University, and sat down to play with a brand new computer called Macintosh.
I had seen the Superbowl ad (and maybe read some advance press?), so I was primed and ready. As a graphic designer and techie, I was eager to try this new machine positioned at the intersection of design and technology.

My first Mac WON’T DIE! I’m starting to worry! #Mac40th
(That’s an app I made for my artist grandmother when her vision worsened and she could no longer paint, nor use computers. File management was just a “sketchbook”: flip pages with those forward/back thumbnails until you get to a blank one. I hid my old PowerBook G3 under her TV and gave her a Wacom tablet to stand back and paint big—for me to print later.)

Today is the 40th anniversary of the Mac. I've “only" been a Mac user since 2007 (which is my entire adult life), but it is my favorite computing platform and the one where I'm most excited by the possibilities of new hardware and software.
My history:
15" MBP Intel Core 2 Duo 2007
Mac Mini 2012
15" MBP Retina Late 2013
Mac Mini 2018
Mac Studio M1 Max + 15" MBA M2Also I picked up used 2010 and late 2013 Mac Pros along the way because I’m a sucker for a Mac desktop. #mac40 #mac40th

Happy 40th to the Macintosh!
I can still remember when I first used one. It felt like the future in a tiny box. I used many since then, but I wouldn’t own one until the PowerMac 8500 came out.

I wonder if the reason Apple is not showing any sign of celebration for the Mac today (SHAMEFUL) has less to do with the Vision Pro hype train and more with the fact that remembering the Macintosh launch without mentioning the 1984 ad is rather hard, and it's pretty clear the role they'd play today #mac40th
