  1. things that make #life easier, whether explicitly a #disability aid, like crutches and wheelchairs, or not, like dishwashers and dryers, should not be #luxuries. people should be able to live life with ease without great expense and for many disabled #people these items are not a case of being comfortable but of just being able to live at all.

  5. Small scale #luxuries like #hairdressers of #nailbars have usually survived economic turmoil as while people have traded down or reduced their demand for expensive luxuries, they have retained the desire to pamper themselves in small ways.

However, now in the UK the #costoflivingcrisis is so grim (with basic foods nearly doubling in price in a year), it seems many hairdressers are finding hard to keep going.

For 'effective demand' this is a real canary in the mine!

  6. Disappointed this article didn't go into more detail about the story re #privilege and #wealth. Instead it just ends up listing shit you can buy which, sure, are #luxuries, if you can't afford them.

However, I'm not sure anything from McDonald's can be considered a luxury in all honesty.

  7. Shopping in #Germany is interesting. A crate of beer (20x 0.5L) is €9.90, but a glass of tahini (250g) €5.99. #essentials & #luxuries - #Grundnahrungsmittel & #Luxus
