Es wird Herbst oder ist bereits Winter? Geplant hatte ich nicht, John Crowleys "Little, Big" zum werweißwievielten Mal zu lesen, aber es passierte: Aufgeschlagen, ein Zitat gefunden, vorn angefangen und ich war wieder verloren.
Phantastische Literatur trifft mich selten so emotional wie dieses Buch. Little, Big berührt mich und mir kommen an manchen Stellen die Tränen. Es ist nur andere Stellen als zuvor. Wie… ?
Ein überaus seltsames Wunder von einem Buch.

I was recently reminded of John Crowley's "LIttle, Big".
It's a fantasy family saga - or is a work of magical realism? - from the early eighties that won a couple of awards and that enjoys a cult following.
I read it some time ago and remember feeling disappointed. The "faerie" world, far from enchanting me, struck me as twee in places, and I also recall being put off by some self conscious "fine writing".
I also think I remember an African American character called Fred Savage who offered aid and advice in hoky dialect to a white protagonist before turning into a tree - in short, the Magical Negro trope at its worst.
Or have I misremembered this? I can't find Fred Savage referenced in the Wikipedia article on the book.

Ordered June 8th, 2008; received July 1st, 2024. The signed, numbered Incunabula "25th" (now "40th") anniversary edition of John Crowley's Little, Big.
That is the longest I've ever waited for a book order, and, honestly I'd pretty much given up on ever seeing it. But it's here, and it's beautiful!

I have a short, exciting new book I want to read, but am only a third of the way through a weighty tome that, although I’m really enjoying it, is really hard work and heavy going. I recall ordering this book back in 2011, but I know some people have waited even longer than I have for it to see the light of day. It was billed as the 25th anniversary edition of John Crowley’s brilliant Little, Big. But time passes, as it’s wont to do, and it‘s now the 40th anniversary edition of a book originally published in 1981 and arriving in February 2023…
At 2.6kg, it’s so heavy I can barely lift it.

The story of this book's publication is incredible, like a literary fable about the impossibility of publishing the perfect edition. I ordered my copy in my twenties and it's finally being delivered... well, after one last delay!
