  1. “I think when you look at the elements, the ingredients, of [Return to Forever’s] music, they are things that people still appreciate. People admire the virtuosic nature of the music. I’ve seen that admiration even by guys who are into completely different types of music. They look at something like Return to Forever and can see accomplishment. Return to Forever has a compositional element to it, but also a jam band quality, and I think people react to that.” - Stanley Clarke

Read the second part of our conversation with Stanley Clarke. N•4EVER will be performing at the Newport Jazz Festival on Saturday, August 3, 2024.

  2. “I think less about the line between [tradition and modernity] as much as I think about my own love for the tradition. I have a very true, and genuine love and passion for jazz music and its history. It literally came from me being a kid and watching the Ken Burns series, listening to records by Duke Ellington and Count Basie, and falling in love with the music.“ - Riley Mulherkar

Read our conversation with Riley Mulherkar on his debut album as a leader, Riley (out now on Westerlies Records), and the upcoming Newport Jazz Festival performance tied to it.

  3. “I’ve thought about how many important saxophonists Roy [Haynes] has played with, whether Charlie Parker, Lester Young, Trane, Eric Dolphy, Joe Henderson, or Kenny Garrett. Roy played with everyone. I did a Charlie Parker tribute gig with him at The Jazz Showcase. I’ll never forget it. We were playing mostly Charlie Parker tunes, and I turned around to see a big poster of Bird on the wall behind Roy. And it’s like “Oh man.” Seeing that poster behind him put everything into perspective.”- Jaleel Shaw

Check out our conversation with Shaw on his past performances at Newport Jazz Festival, working with Roy Haynes, his well overdue upcoming Newport leader debut (with Lawrence Fields, Dezron L Douglas, and Joe Dyson), and more.

  4. “Silence is as important as sound to me. It is with sound and silence that rhythm exists. Whether short notes or long notes in the African clef, the various rhythms that come from Brazil are based on silence and sound and it is very important to remember that the variation of this is the origin of swing, of balance. I love silence.” - Amaro Freitas

Check out our interview with Amaro Freitas on his album, Y’Y (out now on Psychic Hotline) and his forthcoming Newport Jazz Festival performance.

  5. “[J]azz is deep inside me. I’ve studied jazz all my life. I wanted to be a jazz musician. But James Brown came along, offered me a job, and I got involved with him. Eventually, I became more and more involved with funk music. And, so, I became known as a funk musician… But I’ve always been a jazz musician at heart.” - Fred Wesley

We sat down with Fred Wesley to discuss James Brown, George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic, his forthcoming Newport Jazz Festival appearance as part of Christian McBride’s Jam Jawn, and more.

  7. “I think the one thing that makes music special is its soul. Look at music like the Blues. If a computer creates Blues music when it has never experienced the Blues, is it truly the Blues? No. I’m sure that’s the type of question – whether something is music or not- that people will spend a lot of time arguing over. But for me, the music comes down to that soul and warmth. And that’s important to me during the process of creating music as well.“ - Rob Garza

In our first artist interview for the 2024 Newport Jazz season, we sat down with Thievery Corporation’s Rob Garza.
