I came across this tussock moth caterpillar (Lophocampa spp., I think) today, crunching through the leaf litter. Another reminder to leave leaves where they are if and when you can. There is so much alive in there, even if you don't see it.

There were other visitors today too. Smaller but no less gorgeous.
(Blurrier than I'd like, because it's a capture from a video.)

Found this achemon sphinx moth (Eumorpha achemon) in an outdoor stairwell on campus yesterday, near our pollinator garden. #mothstodon #moths #mothsmatter #pollinators #inaturalist #Sphingidae #lepidoptera #lepidoptodon

Found this 2nd generation holly blue yesterday, way up on the 67th parallel north.

1) First ever Swallow Prominent (had Lesser SP before)
2) L-album Wainscot
3) Fan-foot (also new for garden)
4) Tiddly tiny Pammene Aurita micromothAbysmal numerically, only 16 moths of 13 species … 150+ would not be uncommon in July, which is very concerning from #conservation perspective.

The small heath from last summer. I did find this #butterfly this past June too, but not as nicely lit and as calm as the one here.

Observing #butterflies when they've accepted you as part of the background is second only to these precious moments when they choose to interact with you — be it to evaluate a potential threat, to just use you as a stand, or, as here, to get a sip of that deliciously salty sock juice. 😋

The map is a relative newcomer in Finland: it was first found in the 1970s, remained rare throughout the 1980s and the '90s, until establishing itself in Southern Finland after a mass migration in 1999. Since then it has been steadily advancing north, and is now (anecdotally, IME) one of the most numerous species up here in Oulu too.
Beautiful as it is, it's also seen as a harbinger of #ClimateChange.

Caught the male orange tip sitting peacefully for once last week. I have yet to spot the female, though who knows how many I've (dis)missed as one of the many other "white in flight" #butterflies... such as the one in the second picture, which is itself one of two virtually indistinguishable Leptidea species found in Finland.

Ben Goldfarb's latest piece in High Country News on the desperate struggle to keep a northern California butterfly species alive is a great read. Species recovery is a hard and thankless enough job with the most charismatic mammal - for insects, it's the same work, backwards and in heels, for less money. The people who do it deserve more features like this. https://www.hcn.org/issues/55.5/south-endangered-species-inside-the-fight-to-save-a-beleaguered-butterfly
