While taking a breather and sipping water, I noticed a small white moth desperately fluttering to free from the spider’s silk by the trailside. It appeared that the spider wasn’t interested in it, so I used my hiking stick to set it free. The moth circled above me, and flew away to live another night. 🤍🦋✨

I *think* this is a police-car moth (Gnophaela vermiculata). It’s visiting hydrangea flowers (Hydrangea paniculata ‘Quick Fire’).

@hastingsmothman my local residents group has a moth trap that is being shared about. So far 11 people (including the local primary school) have used it.
I presented about it with some photos and even more people have signed up to use it. So many were surprised at how beautiful the moth were.

A friend in #totterdown, is establishing an urban nature reserve where people make their gardens more wildlife friendly. We are docunting local wildlife and I have been loaned a moth trap for a few days. Previous users got 60+ moths in 1 night across 13 species.

Reticulated fruitworm moth (Cenopis reticulatana). The beak-like structure that extends beyond the head is composed of the labial palpi, sensory organs that have a long list of abilities including detection of CO2. CW: We've all heard about the insect apocalypse and here's a personal experience of mine with it
I lived in UCLA married student housing on sawtelle until around 1969. These were old garden style apartments, now torn down and replaced, and had a ton of lantana hedges.
When the lantana was in bloom it was continually surrounded by clouds of one particular kind of moth. I still live in Los Angeles and there's still lantana everywhere but I can't remember the last time I saw one of those moths.
From wiki I think they were
Lantanophaga pusillidactyla, which is a southern California native. The wiki page doesn't say if it's endangered or not, but it's certainly gone from Los Angeles in historic quantities.https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lantanophaga_pusillidactyla
