  1. @acdha
Was nur eine Frage der Zeit war, ist eingetreten: Der Angriff auf die Wissenschaften und das kulturelle Gedächtnis erreicht die Library of Congress. Was kommt nächste Woche? Die "Reinigung" des #LCSH auf #woke Begriffe, wie minority, woman, human rights?

  2. Does anyone have a snapshot of #LCSH in some #RDF serialization from before 14 March 2025? I would love to have an archive copy of it before the vandalism of the terms for "Mexico, Gulf of" and "Mount Denali".

  3. I took the minutes in this week's meeting of the collections department in the Ontario university library where I work. This just a brief sample of what we (and all the other libraries) are trying to start to handle. It followed twenty minutes about Clarivate and how we're not buying ebooks from ProQuest.

  4. Proposal for Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) to rename the Gulf of Mexico (Denali also on the list). UF means "use for."

From the abstract: "Nonetheless, human catalogers remain essential for verifying and enhancing the validity, exhaustivity, and specificity of LCSH generated by LLMs.”

  6. I woke up thinking I needed to make a Library of Congress subject headings magnetic poetry set. Stay tuned!

  7. The Library of Congress's exploration of revisions of subject headings for American #indigenous groups (see loc.gov/aba/cataloging/subject ) represents, among other things, an opportunity for #LCSH and catalogs to rely more on linked relationships between subjects than on unlinked implicit relationships via common string patterns.

(They're rightly planning to rely more on what each indigenous group prefers, rather than just using "__ Indians". But different groups embrace different terminologies.)

  8. The @librarycongress welcomes Sexual minority activists...with a redirect from Queer activists. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯s in #LCSH

  9. Not me getting fired up reading an #LCSH monthly approved list. classweb.org/approved-subjects

How is Future life still a thing? And the need to get country designations approved, e.g., Creative non-fiction, Yugoslav--unnecessary delay. Re: Exiled lawyers, how annoying is that Expatriates isn't a heading (it's a variant of Noncitizens, which is *different*, but there are Expatriate [profession] headings). Greedy algorithms, though, that's a fun one!

    White supremacy (Social structure)!!! #critcat

  10. Heard often in my head while cataloging "Can I get a scope note for that vague af heading?"

  11. Has the concept of text-based computer games been squeezed out of #LCSH? "Computer games" and related subject headings appear to have been discontinued in favor of "Video games". While I can see good reason to prefer the latter nowadays (you often see the same game on video consoles and on PCs, and most computer games these days have a video/visual component) I'm not seeing any replacement terms for nonvideo computer games (like most MUDs, text adventures, and games written for teletypes).

  13. Big #LCSH / #CritCat news:

    Enslaved persons

Special list 2212a consisted of 55 proposals to revise the heading Slaves to Enslaved persons as well as other headings that used the wording Slaves. This is the culmination of a project started in 2022. The meeting thanks the African-American SACO Funnel for their careful, thorough research and hard work to make these proposals.

  14. This week's Links includes:

    - great piece by Alissa McCulloch on Australian #cataloguing and #LCSH (intentional 'u')

    - #ChatGPT and #authroship and #copyright

-some thoughts on who should be responsible for #researchintegrity

-Always more things happening with transformative agreements

-Results from a survey of archives administrators

And some other things (I've forgotten, tbh)

  21. @swib some of the concerns/issues:

    - Labels, data models and concepts
    - Standards rooted in colonial practices
    - Problematic or incorrect data relationships
    - Data governance
    - Provenance
