  1. That rare photo that did exactly what I wanted. Definitely one I'd print (though possibly reversed)

  5. A tale of four frames...

The first two images were shot on Ortho Plus, the second two on HP5. The Ortho shots were taken at slightly different shutter speeds in order to try to bracket the exposure a bit. On both the sky was pretty washed out, which makes some sense given the film. On the first I tried using a drawn and parametric mask in darktable - I'm still *very* new to masks, so I don't think I did a great job...you can see some interesting marks around the tree trunk. But I used the mask to increase the contrast of the sky to pull some of the clouds out.

The second two were taken at the same shutter speed as each other - I managed to catch a bird in one of the frames, and wanted to have one without the bird to see what I liked better. The sky looks a lot better right out of the gate - the only adjustment I made (other than reversing via negadoctor) was to increase the contrast slightly, which is something I generally do on all my black and white photos. If I had this to do over again, I would've added an orange or red filter. I need to see if one that I already have will fit the 210mm lens I have.

I wish - and a better handle of both masking and the negadoctor module could likely get me there - that I could get the exposure and detail of the tree trunk on the Ortho frames with the sky of the HP5 frames.

Oh, and I guess this means the new field camera works. 😃

Photo description because I don't feel like typing the same alt-text in 4 times: A weathered and bare tree trunk in a field, with a wire fence in front of it and some type of rusted farm equipment sitting on the ground nearby.
