  1. My library’s new Libby acquisitions came through for me in a BIG way this morning, just in time for my beachside family holiday

  2. ‘Flesh’ by David Szalay.

I like this novel. I’m still not sure whether the protagonist is a calculating asshole, or a naive guy to who most stuff just happens. Or a bit of both.

Well-written too. I love such concise language.

  3. Just finished ‘The Unfolding of Language’ by Guy Deutscher.

    I love it.

I’ve learnt loads about the structure of language.

    E.g.:

In most languages it’s easy to turn a noun into a verb: ‘Alice skins a cow’.
But turning a verb into a noun often requires adding letters: ‘move’ - ‘movement’. Or in Dutch: ‘bewegen’ - ‘beweging’.

My books, low-key fantasy with romance, mostly queer, are currently in the annual end of year #Smashwords sale — they’re already affordable but now they’re extra affordable, all 25% off:
    smashwords.com/profile/view/we

but you’ll also find them on #KoboPlus or #Hoopla, or any of your favourite ebook retailers. They’re not for everyone…but the readers who like them…REALLY like them 😊

  5. Sam Leith, ‘You Talkin' to Me? Rhetoric from Aristotle to Obama’ (Profile Books, 2011)

I had great fun reading this. I learnt a lot too. I also admit that the book is somewhat nerdy.

  6. Huh?

In ancient Athens: 'it was a rare citizen who did not go to court at least a half a dozen times during the course of his adult life'.

From Sam Leith, ‘You talkin to me?’.

He quotes Edward P. J. Corbett and Robert J. Connors, Classical Rhetoric for the Modern Student (4th edn, Oxford University Press, 1999)

  7. ‘Invisible helix’, by Keigo Higashino. Great Japanese detective novel. I’m a fan of his books in general. I can’t assess the Japanese, but in the English translation I love the simple and concise writing style. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keigo_Hi #books #holidayreading #japan

  8. ‘The Proof of My Innocence’, by Jonathan Coe

Good novel. Quite funny sometimes, and well-written. Partly set during the brief period in which Liz Truss was prime minister of the UK.

  9. This summer I’ve been binge reading the Harry Bosch series and the Lincoln Lawyer series by Michael Connelly. I highly recommend both. Loads of suspense, fast-paced scripts, tight concise sentences. michaelconnelly.com/series/ #books #reading #holidayreading

  10. This #HolidayReading took a bit of time to get into. This is Memorial Device. Hallucinations of misfits and a fictional post punk Scottish band that never was, told via a series of rambling 'interviews'.

  11. More #HolidayReading ...two quirky Polish novels. 'Mrs Mohr goes missing' (humourous historical crime detection in the manner of Agatha Christie - but better) and 'Things I didn't throw out ' (poignant and wryly funny book about death, mothers with attitude, and things that are kept and things that are lost).

  12. After some wonderful, but perhaps grim at times, set of novels so far, this return to the Tales of the City universe, by Armistead Maupin was fun diversion in my #HolidayReading. Picking up the story of Mona in her new English setting.

  13. Continuing the #HolidayReading with Glory by NoViolet Bulawayo. Stunning re-invention of Animal Farm, set in a fictional African state that could be so many realities, visceral depictions of dictators and state violence, but running through the book there's hope and love and the strength of survivors.

  14. Another book I have been meaning to read for ages, made it into the suitcase. Maggie O'Farrell's heartbreaking dive into the depths of grief of a mother who loses a child, and conjuring up of Shakespeare's domestic world. Couldn't put it down. #HolidayReading

  15. Holiday read 4. An oldie but goodie. Andrey Kurkov's Penguin lost. Notable Ukrainian writer revisits Viktor, ex obituary writer and his penguin friend Misha. A tale involving mafia, corruption, family, murder and a penguin...what's not to like ? #HolidayReading

  16. Third holiday book read, late to the dystopian party I read Paul Lynch's Prophet Song. With the racist riots in England right now this story of the rapid disintegration of a nation and a family reads a bit like a warning... The comparison with Handmaid's Tale is well made. #HolidayReading

  17. Next up in my holiday book challenge this gem. How to describe 'Interesting facts about space', Emily Austin's novel about a woman who among many remarkable things is, deaf in one ear, terrified of bald men, obsessed with true crime podcasts and a lesbian who works in space informatics. I think it's a love story but it's also a wonderful book for anyone who has ever worried about being lovable. #HolidayReading

  18. Making progress with the holiday book pile....first up Michael Ondaatje, Running in the family...a memoir of a wonderful crazy (in the best possible way) family. Makes you wish you'd known some of them...and been able to keep up with the drinking and partying. #HolidayReading

  19. My #HolidayReading.
I'm powering my way through this book by #StevenWilson #PorcupineTree
I can highly recommend if you're a fan of his music. I'm a newbie but rapidly catching up!

Ps the Union Jack tableware is the choice of the holiday letting company, not me 😅

  20. ‘The Lost Weekend’ (1944) by Charles R. Jackson. Pretty depressing. The whole novel happens during a long weekend (5 days). The main character is a serious alcoholic and spends the book, well, drinking and trying to arrange money for drinking. Well-written though. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lost Partly autobiographical apparently. #books #holidayreading

  21. ‘Last Resort’ by Andrew Lipstein. I couldn’t put down this novel. The main character, an author, is, well, stupid and arrogant. Weirdly, I still have some sympathy for him. And the book is hilarious. theguardian.com/books/2022/mar #books #holidayreading

  22. I'm trying out the #ThreadOfThreads idea: Keeping one (actually one each for English and German) of Fediverse threads I authored.

I start with a top-ten list of articles (or threads for those articles), according to the page views.

    Happy #HolidayReading season!

  24. #HolidayReading I just discovered Italian author (and former anti-maffia judge and former senator) Gianrico Carofiglio. I have binge read 6 novels in a row about lawyer Guido Guerrieri. Great stuff! I admit that I’m a legal nerd en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gianri #books #law #italy

  31. Next on the reading list is One Hundred Days by Alice Pung.

Again, not sure about this one, but I will report in.

I was going to read Klara and the Sun, but realised I have read it. Loved it.
