  2. @ElenLeFoll
    Sad and true 😡

For others, who like me didn't know the term #OERs

"Open educational resources (#OER) are teaching, learning, and research materials intentionally created and licensed to be free for the end user to own, share, and in most cases, modify."

    en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_e

  3. Just saw an add for a (free) interactive workshop on how to create #OERs with #GenAI and my immediate reaction is noooooooo! Honestly, I think this is the last thing we need: pollute #OER databases with AI slop. Might as well bury the OER movement before it even really took off... #Education

  9. From my adventures in #OpenScience and #OpenPedagogy: I always thought the importance of #OpenAccess was that people can read the paper and access the data, so sharing a version of record or a postprint of a paywalled paper would do the job. Only when I started preparing #OERs I realized the importance of licensing: being able to re-use figures, datasets, code from publications. In #sedmentology ans #geoscience #OpenAccess is a sore minority. I can access the most important papers from my field, but I cannot share my teaching based on them.

Fortunately my former supervisor agreed to license his thin section collection with a #CreativeCommons license, so I am gradually adding them here commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Cat (more to come).

FWIW I've also learned that @GIMP is great for editing #metadata but Mastodon web interface does not read it from the image.

  10. Do you know GOOD #OERs in natural science? I know great #OER books such as those by @matherion but I'm not ready to make a book ;-) I want to make a module for an undergrad course in #geoscience #paleontology. And I find examples of not great #OERs, basically someone's assignment instruction uploaded as a pdf. I'd like to do better but not re-invent the wheel. What does it take to make a good #OER for a single practical? #openscience @academicchatter

  11. @drcpennington I have it and it’s a terrific resource - a great fit for my fourth-year Methods class, except that I am committed to only requiring #OERs as texts. I will make it a recommended text.

  12. It might be time for a broad (and thoughtful) conversation on the limits of openness, in the #OpenEcosystem? How do #OpenGovernment and #OpenData work within the #FreeSoftware framework? Do #OERs run the risk of promoting #fauxpen and #OpenWashing?

    @lightweight @LibreTexts

  13. Just learnt about a bilingual (ES/FR) association working towards #DecolonizingKnowledge.

    noircirwikipedia.org/fr/accuei

Sounds like they're active in the French-speaking part of Switzerland as well as in Guyana.
People in #OpenEducation who care about #EpistemicJustice have a role to play in making sure that diverse knowledges are learnt. When we talk about going beyond #OERs, that's part of what we mean.

    #NoircirWikipédia / #EnnegreciendoWikipédia

  14. @LibraryBen (And we're not even getting into the difference between #OpenAccess and #OERs with their #5Rs.) 😉

  15. As #podcasting is having a bit of a moment in #HigherEd (at least in my network), I wonder what people think about Adobe's 2021 #ProjectShasta, which leveraged #PracticalAI to ease #PodcastProduction.
The technology could really help in the creation of audio-based #OERs, as @cogdog might find out. Too bad it's a closed tool!

Could make for an #AskATP segment @atpfm, especially since @marcoarment has been exploring diverse approaches to enhance #Podcast recording. labs.adobe.com/projects/shasta

  16. Thanks @cogdog for introducing all of us @oeglobal to the #EpistemicJustice work @whoseknowledge.

As someone whose knowledge is widely represented, I feel like I'm listening in a very important conversation about concrete action which will have a deeply positive impact on our work in #OpenEducation. Whether it's about revising #OERs or fighting #HiddenCurricula.

Centring marginalized voices may not always produce harmony. It's always important.

    connect.oeglobal.org/t/oeg-liv

  17. @noemu Thanks for sharing! Are you involved in similar work? How did you find out about these toolsets?

As they include games, they're particularly relevant to our team. As it so happens, we're doing lab sessions in both English and French on #Ludopedagogy.
    eductive.ca/en/labs/ludopedago

The next one (in French) will be on prototyping games. The third one will be on games as #OERs.

  18. "Libraries in the Open ecosystem"
    @nic221
There's a lot to the "Ecosystem of Open". #OpenEcosystem
From F/LOSS, #OpenData, and #OpenBadges to #OpenScience, #OpenGovernment, and #OERs, let's work through a whole system of complex interrelations. Yes, that includes activities @weareopencoop & @openedtech.social. Also, #InfoPros (librarians et al.).
#LOUDGLAM is a neat example: Linked Open Usable Data in Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums.

  19. @cnsyoung About funding, a semi-unsollicited piece of advice: probably best to start with a no-cost solution for prototyping and use that to find proper funding, necessary to make the initiative sustainable. As we often say, #OERs aren't free in that they require monies and efforts to create, host, manage, etc. Much of that cost is in salaries, of course. Infrastructure costs aren't prohibitive: <10kUSD for 20k registrants, 200k visitors. @lightweight irrodl.org/index.php/irrodl/ar

  20. Very successful event @concordialib organized @ssmuaeum @csumtl about Open Educational Resources. Though I can’t be in Inverness for #OER23, I get opportunities to promote #OERs face-to-face, with students involved.

  21. Hey, #OER folks, at #OER23 or not... Might the #HiveMind produce a list?

Was asked for key examples of #OERs which stood the test of time: being frequently updated, adapted in different contexts. My first reflex would be the Anthology began @actualham with learners. Then, thinking about the whole of #ds106 as an "integrative OER", @ds106radio or just in everything which has happened through this.
Would be keenly interested in examples from the so-called #GlobalSouth.
    Because #EpistemicJustice

  22. @LivingCooki Particularly important for #OERs and other #LearningResources. If we want to support #LearningExperience, we need to at least try to make the material as accessible as possible. #a11y

  23. @DrJRN Right. One approach, there, might be to break things apart in smaller chunks, especially if you can base that on learning objectives. Then, you can curate #OERs to match. A bit like #Textmaps @LibreTexts. Did something like this for five courses in digital transformation, in French. Found quite a few resources which will then serve for co-creation and further collaborative curation. It did take some time, though way less than we had planned in the contract.

  24. In July, we'll celebrate the 50th (or 10th) anniversary of that seminal presentation @worrydream on the #FutureOfProgramming.
    worrydream.com/dbx/
Coupled with Victor's work on Learnable Programming, I find links to #LiterateProgramming... which tie nicely with the diverse ways we have to create learning resources, especially #OERs leveraging #FreeSoftware tools. #Jupyter, #Quarto, #PreTeXt, etc.

  25. @weblearning Fully agreed. I get the impression that most people @oeglobal would agree as well. @cogdog has started some threads on LLMs as they pertain to #OpenEducation and #OERs. To my mind, the problem is that thoughtful and nuanced discussions require deeper engagement with the issues. We haven't created the "common ground" from which we could discuss these things. #PublicEngagement specialists are deeply aware of this issue in #ParticipatoryDemocracy.

  26. @weblearning As for #GlobalSouth, there's an emerging trend by scholars there who speak up, within the field of #OpenEducation more widely (usually beyond #OERs). Some of those voices were (all-too-briefly) heard during the conf @oeglobal in Nantes. And it goes all the way to #EpistemicJustice.
As with the two-pronged approach of #Decolonization and #Indigenization or with #a11y advocates' #NothingAboutUsWithoutUs, we have diverse roles. Mine is closer to allyship than asking their questions.

  27. Speaking of #OpenEducation (with the #OpenEducationConference starting soon)…
Sure feels like the fruit is ripe so that we can resolutely go beyond #OERs towards a large set of #OpenPractices in learning (and teaching).

  28. What do specialists of #OERs (and other #OpenEducation experts) think of the #InclusiveAccess model? How does this study jibe with those thoughts? @actualham?
    inclusiveaccess.org/posts/does

    > The peer-reviewed study is the first and largest of its kind, and its findings raise questions about whether these programs live up to the promise of improving academic outcomes.
