Nature & Garden Podcasts (to keep us going in this mad world)
Being podcasts about nature and gardening, you can get the same joy hearing episodes from past years, but I recommend choosing the month you are in from past years, and thus keeping the seasonality. As a podcast player, I use AntennaPod, but you can search by each title on your player of choice and add them to your list.
The plodcast – From BBC Countryfile Magazine, you’ll get two different kind of episodes per week. At Tuesdays, we join experts that work in nature related fields, and at Fridays, we get a soundscape, with a quick introduction and then the sounds of nature.
Gardeners’ World Magazine – The episodes vary between. around 40 minutes, with interviews and visits to nature, community, and garden projects, or just five minutes to ten minutes, to talk about how to grow a specific plant or what to do in a certain time of the year. There is also some episodes about house plants.
Chris Skinner’s Countryside & The Countryside Hour – The latter one ended in a BBC reorganisation, but you can still hear the episodes. They are both from the same person, Chris Skinner, a Norfolk farmer, owner of the High Ash Farm. With Matthew Gudgin, they stroll through the farm describing and recording their observations and answering questions from the listeners. (I’ve seen hares before, but it was in one of the episodes I heard for the first time how they sound: totally unexpected!).
Gardner’s Corner – With David Maxwell, this program from BBC Radio Ulster has around an hour and is a favourite of mine. The give advice, talk to experts, and visit gardens. They also take calls from listeners, and while I can’t put my finger on a specific reason, this is one of my comforting listenings.
Gardners’ Question Time – A team of gardening experts go around the country with a live audience that asks questions related to their gardens. Very funny, but useful too.
Gardening with RHS – Around 30 minutes episodes, with a wide range of themes related with gardening.
Home Grown with Martha and Jamie – A conversation between Jamie Walton (also known as Nettles & Petals and his eco-friendly garden) and Martha Swales (Marf’s Kitchen Garden and a London gardener, with experience and advice on urban gardening).
Why Woman Grow – A companion to the book of the same title and of which I wrote before.
The Stubborn Light of Things – Another podcast that seems to have ended, but you still can hear the episodes. It started during the pandemic and Melissa Harrison, a nature writer, takes you through the Suffolk countryside describing and recording what she sees and hears.
