🚀 Ah, the timeless pursuit of explaining the universe with jargon that even Sheldon Cooper would roll his eyes at. Greg Egan's latest attempt at making geometry sound exciting is like trying to turn a math lecture into a rock concert—spoiler alert: it’s still just math. 🔍 #PolyhedronMadness

As a mail subscriber to #AsimovsScienceFiction magazine, I get a vote in their 2025 reader's awards. It was fun to go back and re-read my favourite stories for the year to decide my rankings:
Best Novella:
1. Quantum Ghosts, #NancyKress
2. The Chronolithographer's Assistant, #SuzannePalmer
3. Spare Parts for the Mind, #GregEganBest Novelette:
1. Most Things, #RichLarson
2. On the Night Shift, #ZoharJacobs
3. The Fight Goes On, #HarryTurtledoveBest Short Story:
1. Catch a Tiger in the Snow, #RayNayler
2. Lolo's Last Run, #EMKerkman
3. Woolly, #CarrieVaughnBest Poem:
1. I Try to Explain the Concept of Teeth to My Alien Roommate, #RachelLintonBest Cover:
1. July/August, #MaurizioManzieri (attached image)- My subscription started after the Jan/Feb issue, so that got snubbed.
- For all that print #SciFi magazines are now extremely marginal commercially and culturally, this one at least still attracts some pretty great material (mixed in, admittedly, with some so-so stuff) including by veteran greats of the genre - Kress and Turtledove are still producing amazing work in their mid-late 70s!
- I found the Novella section hardest to trim down to 3, with narrow cuts for stories by T.R. Napper, Ted Kosmatka, and John Kessel.
- It was a great year for pets in SF stories, or maybe as a dog- and cat-lover I'm just sucker for them. I found a place in my heart for Lolo, Magritte, Goobler the miniature woolly mammoth, Sponge, and of course, the tiger in the snow! -
The most recent #AsimovsScienceFiction to appear in my mailbox features an absorbing cover future story from #GregEgan about a dementia sufferer's experimental brain implants that lead him to a partial recovery, but also highlights a world of techbro hype, conspiracy theories, and dubious intellectual property claims surrounding the technology. My favourite story in the collection was the beautiful, very short, 'Catch a Tiger in the Snow' by #RayNayler . Also nice to see a rare appearance of a New Zealand author in a #SciFi collection, #SeanMonaghan . @bookstodon #Bookstodon

dear fedi #sciencefiction readers, i am looking for a next #book. to give you an idea what i might be looking for: i've just finished #peterwatts #rifters trilogy and i enjoyed it. my favorite piece of all time is #gregegan #permutationcity (it's still haunting me after all those years). at the other hand, i could not finish #murderbot. please feel free to throw at me anything, just don't send me to check goodreads! (sorry for tag spam, i am in a tight spot 😅)

Page 1 features the most #GregEgan quote ever: "The number of parallel worlds is uncountably infinite - infinite like the real numbers, not merely like the integers". This 1995 collection is significantly earlier work than the other Egan collection I own (Oceanic), and I must admit I prefer the ultra far future Amalgam universe approach of his more recent stories, but this is still a very solid collection. @bookstodon #Bookstodon #SciFi

There's no-one like Greg Egan when it comes to taking a simple idea (imagine if the world had different scales of dimension all interleaved) and going barmy with it. This is classic Egan brain-hurting and I love it.

CW: SPOILERS for Futurama and Permutation City
Sooo... as it was getting near the end of S11E10 of #Futurama (All The Way Down), I thought... they're not, are they?
And, yep, they did. They copied one of the plot points from @gregeganSF #GregEgan's #PermutationCity which came out in 1994.
So, my theory that #ScienceFiction moves from hardcore to mainstream in around thirty years is, once again, VINDICATED!
They'll rue the day they expelled me from the academy, those CLAMS!
-
I just finished #Scale by #GregEgan and, as usual, I'm left with a hurty brain but also an intriguing story.
Here's an intro to it: https://www.gregegan.net/SCALE/SCALE.html
So, yeah, wild premise that's not fantasy it's (very) #HardSF :
https://www.gregegan.net/SCALE/01/ScienceOfScale.html
(WARNING - heavy physics in that linky.)
So there's all that but the actual story is far more about the human condition, politics, fear, love, community. Egan's use of scale is an ingenious invention that will make you ponder 'what if.'

CW: Greg Egan, SLEEP AND THE SOUL
Attention to the real ones: the legendary Greg Egan has an original short story collection, SLEEP AND THE SOUL, out in various print and ebook formats:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/100184137-sleep-and-the-soul
Egan's original 90s anthologies AXIOMATIC and LUMINOUS have got to be up there with the best sf ever.

I recently read Schild's Ladder by @gregeganSF . Like a lot of his work, full of fun and thought-provoking ideas for how the universe could work, mixed with great world-building.
I am skeptical of some of the quantum mechanics stuff, though quantum mechanics isn't my area. Will post in a spoiler-guarded follow-up.

Right. So way behind posting Book 6 of #HaveRead which was Greg Egan again. Perihelion Summer is a great novella? Short novel? Or real page turner with lots of climate change? It glances off some of the physics flyby in "Instantiation" but in this case objects perturb the Earth's orbit so we get instant crisis. A short version of KSR's "Ministry for the Future" is in here. And maybe better for being shorter and local.
-
Book 4: The #SF anthology "#Instantiation" by #GregEgan. This hits some of the points he usually dives deep on: physics, math, escape. If you liked "Orthogonal" this will scratch some of the same itches in places.
Amidst all the chat-GPT #AI hype this is a good antidote.
Sequence starting with "Bit Players" was creative. A good counterpoint to transhumanism mind upload stuff.
The Pane in "The Slipway" from 2019 hit a lot of the slide into fascism we've been living in but sidewise.

CW: Sex, shagging, Simulation theory, kink
1. AHA - you fell into my devious #HACF trap:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halt_and_Catch_Fire_(TV_series)
2. awhhh
3. Nah, more #GregEgan than #DennisETaylor
tbh, that's a pretty solid core subset!
