I have finished Earthside by Dennis E. Taylor. Unfortunately I really just don't have much good to say about this book. I never found it quite so offensive to DNF it, but there's quite a bit of bad here. Gave it a 3 out of 5, but I feel like I'm being generous with that.

Dennis E Taylor was comfortable enough in a post-apocalyptic story to write about slavery and rape - again, some of our worst behavior. Yet he pulled up short at the idea of soldiers treating slavers and rapists with anything but kid gloves.
I think Taylor probably intends this to say something honorable about these soldiers. If so, I think he failed. 🧵5/5

I have to say that I'm pretty irritated with Dennis E. Taylor for this one. Writing about post-apocalyptic scenarios will often lead to discussing or depicting some of the worst of human behavior, that's certainly to be expected... 🧵1/5

I'm 18% into Earthside already. I'm happy to report that so far coffee has not been the primary concern in the book. It's becoming apparent at this point, though, that Taylor really needs to improve his character work. They are largely unrecognizable from one another aside from the skill they bring to the table. It feels like it's written by a project manager.

I'm a little under 40% through the audiobook. At this point the extreme focus on coffee is starting to grate on me. That, mixed with the detail on very menial tasks that the characters are performing. I'm hoping both of these change soon.
