1/2 In previous posts, I've discussed that part of my position as an *academic* librarian means I have the right to 20% of research time (as part of my job). Usually, this is taken in bulk. But that's not always feasible. For this year, I am short 21 days, & I decided to distribute them over the remainder of autumn: Every time I get a chance, I will work on my transcriptions and improve the #HTR models for my #EthicaComplementoria and related #GeorgGreflinger editions.

A long time ago, I wanted to do a #PhD project on text reuse & text production strategies of #EarlyModern #Author #GeorgGreflinger. I estimated ca. 30,000 pages of printed text. It was 2009/10, and large-scale digitisation of older books had just started. #OCR was a mess, & #HTR hadn't been a thing yet. Eventually, I abandoned the project, since manually transcribing 30,000 pp. & then doing computational analysis for text similarity & re-use was unfeasible.
Imagine I wanted to do that now! -

While I wait for the text recognition to be done, I continue manually transcribing another text. I stumbled upon it while researching #GeorgGreflinger. It's the Early Modern Society of the Swan Order, #Elbschwanenorden. Their rules, statutes, & poetic program were published in 1666 by one of its members, #ConradVonHövelen. The quality of the digitised print is worse than the text, which is pompous even by baroque standards. Have a look! It's quite painfully low resolution...

#Day9 of my research leave continues in slow-mo: I'm doing some mild proofreading of a transcription on #Transkribus, and I have updated my personal website, too.
Additionally, I added some literature to my Zotero library for the #EthicaComplementoria and the #GeorgGreflinger edition projects, incl. scanning old physical copies of articles #OldSchool -

#Day 3 of research leave continues with a blog post on the #GeorgGreflinger weblog: https://greflinger.hypotheses.org/586
Today's digression was filenames #RDM #ResearchDataManagement. However, there was also the starting meeting w/ the new research assistant who will work on the automatic transcription of the Danish translation of the #EthicaComplementoria from 1678! -

#Day1 of my summer research leave!
Read about the exciting things I have been up to today on the #GeorgGreflinger weblog: https://greflinger.hypotheses.org/568 #EthicaComplementoria #ResearchDataManagement #Histodons #BookHistory #EarlyModernHistory
[Hint: "exciting" is a euphemism for being mad at my past self for not properly managing data...] -
