I'm trying out a new (to me) Android keyboard.

My main demands are 100% fast accurate swiping (glide typing) and voice input, plus, I want something privacy oriented this time.

FUTO is great. Everything happens on board, including the voice typing, which is rare. Most pull Google for it.

Previously to get swiping that I could tolerate, it required using Gboard or Yandex. Neither one of those has a good privacy reputation.

So far FUTO is a keeper. 👍

I am trying to force myself to give up gboard despite so many years of muscle memory. Futo has been incredible but the anti-correction has been iffy. These setting plus the split for my fold have greatly helped. Oh and the whisper powered voice typing is amazing

The only thing keeping me on FUTO is the fact that it fixes the annoyance of #AOSP Android assuming that hyphenated-words are new words and trying to spell-correct them. If Heliboard ever fixes that bug, I'll be on it forever. It's so close to perfect now, it's ridiculous.

Wir hatten und ja schon über #FUTO Voice ausgetauscht.

Ich suche nun wieder mal dringend ein Tool auf Android, mit dem ich zumindest #Sprachmemos, besser auch Podcasts, offline transkribieren kann (voice recognition).
Ich dachte, ich hätte das Einlesen einer Sounddatei in FUTO schon mal hinbekommen gehabt, finde jedoch nun nichts mehr. :(

😵 Dark mode just cost me two straight days of work at least. How? Just look at the picture below and witness things appearing out of nothing.

Background info: I like #Futo #LouisRossmann and the #ConsumerRightsWiki and planned to do a drive-by-contribution so that they get a proper logo.

And, yes, I DID search thoroughly for an existing logo. Now that I'm almost finished I turned on dark mode by accident and was baffled. Looks like all my work was for nothing.

What does the Fediverse know about FUTO?

I came across an interesting talk about FreeNet on YouTube, and noticed that it was from the FUTO channel. I don't know why, but my Spidey "this is evil" senses were already tingling, despite my enthusiasm for the talk.

The other videos were all by male-coded ppl when I browsed the channel. Red flag, maybe.

Vor ner Weile hatte ich ja ein wenig die Calyx-Tastatur-App bemängelt. In einem Kommentar gab es dann die Empfehlung für die Futo-App.
Ich sag mal so... Sehr viel besser ist die auch nicht als vorher. 🤷‍♀️
Die Wortvorschläge sind zwar minimal besser, aber selbst lernen tut diese App auch nicht. Ein Wörterbuch zu dem Zweck aufbauen kann man nicht, weil die entsprechende Einstellung dafür englisch ist, welche man nicht ändern kann. Es gäbe ein lernendes Modell, aber auch das ist englisch und nicht auf deutsch einstellbar. Andere Funktionen sind noch gar nicht verfügbar, weil auf der Webseite der App im entsprechenden Segment dann "under construction" steht.
Naja... Ein Versuch war es wert, aber ich bin echt nicht zufrieden, wenn man Worte x-mal schreibt und die App sie sich nicht merken kann. 😕
Mal sehen, was ich jetzt ausprobiere... 🤔

A year ago, I heard about the Grayjay project from Louis Rossmann and loved the idea of a third-party platform that centralizes subscriptions around the creator being followed, rather than the platform itself.

I didn’t try it before because I’m not using Android for media consumption, and for the past year, it was only available on Android.

While Grayjay may not be fully open-source, it’s crucial to support projects that prioritize user privacy and provide a seamless experience.

I’m excited to see how this project evolves and hope it inspires more ethical software development in the future. I can’t wait to test it out myself! It’s refreshing to see a project that prioritizes user choice and accessibility.

@crft as a fun workaround, you can install #FCast on your machine, then cast #GrayJay from your phone to your #Linux computer. It's not a perfect or even nice solution, but I've been doing it anyway and it works well enough. It's also not #Google only, you can get it on #FDroid using the #FUTO repo.

ALTERNATIVE #04: TASTIERA ANDROID* (GBOARD)

DISCLAIMER: questa non è una pubblicità per la FUTO, ho pensato di fare questa guida per le ragioni che spiego e perché mi sto trovando benissimo!

Molti pensano che la tastiera virtuale del telefono faccia parte delle componenti base e che non possa essere cambiata, invece è una semplice app.
Un'app che ha accesso direttamente a tutto quello che scriviamo, prima che venga crittografato dalle varie app di chat (anche le più sicure)...
Perciò, se la tastiera si connette a internet, può inviare ai server tutto quello che digitiamo.

Per questo, se teniamo alla nostra sovranità digitale, la tastiera è la prima app da sostituire.

Ho ottime ragioni per fidarmi di quella installata di default nel mio telefono degooglizzato, ma per chi usa un regolare sistema Android la tastiera di default è quella di Google, Gboard, che è nota per inviare ai server pacchetti dal contenuto per lo meno sospetto.

1) FUTO Keyboard
Poco tempo fa ho scoperto questo bel progetto della FUTO per rimpiazzare tutte le funzioni (anche le più avanzate) di Gboard, escludendo però ogni collegamento a internet durante l'utilizzo e utilizzando basi di dati più trasparenti (il training per il modello di digitazione a scorrimento, per esempio, viene fatto su base volontaria tra utenti che scelgono di contribuire).

Detto ciò, parliamo di una tastiera open source (più propriamente, source available) che ha integrati:
- dettatura vocale multilingue (voice input)
- immissione a scorrimento (swipe)
- dizionari per la lingua e per la ricerca delle emoji
- pannello di selezione delle emoji di sistema
- funzioni per spostarsi facilmente nel testo
- funzioni di copia e incolla avanzate, tra cui la cronologia degli appunti

È ancora in uno stadio iniziale di sviluppo, perciò ci alcune cose sono ancora in corso di implementazione e, per esempio, i dizionari e i modelli vanno installati a mano, e i menu di impostazione sono solo in inglese per il momento.
Ma ciononostante è sicuramente la più completa e promettente!

2) Heliboard
Heliboard è un progetto open source già molto ricco di feature e con la possibilità di essere completato da una libreria opzionale per l'immissione a scorrimento (che però è quella proprietaria di Google, estratta da Gboard).

Purtroppo Heliboard non è presente nel Play Store, perciò dovrete installarla tramite F-Droid

3) Altre tastiere open source sono anche Florisboard e Fossify Keyboard.
Le funzionalità sono simili a quelle di Heliboard, eccetto che non supportano lo swipe.
Nessuna delle due supporta la dettatura vocale.
Per chi cerca il massimo della trasparenza, però, sono le più raccomandate (insieme a Heliboard).

Fossify Keyboard è reperibile sul Play Store.
Florisboard si può trovare su F-Droid

4) La tastiera minimalista: Simple Keyboard
Se tutto quello che vi serve è una tastiera, non sopportate l'autocorrettore e i suggerimenti e non vi interessa inserire le emoji, allora questa è la vostra tastiera ideale. Potrebbe rendere anche più veloce un vecchio telefono perché occupa pochissima memoria e non ha bisogno di processori moderni.

Die #Androidtastatur #Openboard scheint es nicht mehr zu geben. Auf #Fdroid finde ich sie nicht mehr. Auf Github ist seit mehr als drei Jahren nichts gemacht worden und der Link von dort zu Fdroid führt ins Nirwana.

I have been on the lookout for a sensible Gboard replacement that wasn't making my (voice) typing experience painful, and so far only FUTO Keyboard managed to provide that.

It has really good offline voice typing as well, which is something I use a lot.

I can not recommend this enough!

You may recall, I was trying to find a #privacy-respecting keyboard for Android that could work with FUTO Voice Input.

The best I could figure out was #FlorisBoard.
But suddenly people who made Voice Input published a keyboard...
And it's all I could ever ask for, plus the voice recognition is a couple times faster! It's INSANE.

The software isn't exactly #opensource, it's what I'd call "fair software" (referencing #freesoftware).

I'm testing this #FlorisBoard as a replacement for Gboard on my phone. And what's awesome is - it does work with #FUTO Voice Input. So I can have voice typing without requiring any online services. And without having to click through menus each time I want to use it. Awesome!

This just came to my attention, GrayJay is an app that intends to let you follow various creators regardless of what platform they are on, all in one place.

It is open-source and already supports services like; YouTube, kick, Odysee, Patreon, Twitch, SoundCloud and more.

the latest conversation of @BrodieOnLinux and the #Futo guy on the #TechOverTea podcast was quite interesting.

What I found strange is how they separate licenses by being #OpenSource or #FreeSoftware. AFAIK, most popular licenses like GPL, MIT, BSD, MPL, etc. conform to both the #FSF and the #OSI standards. I guess what they meant was #CopyLeft vs permissive licenses?
