After CenturyLink/QuantumFiber/AT&T replaced our fiber terminal, and I replaced our wi-fi router, things seem to have gotten a bit more stable.
However, we are still having these occasional slowdowns for around 30 seconds, where everything becomes choppy and latency jumps up.
I just captured one that lasted 36 seconds, so I know I am not imagining it. I just wish the fiber company had any idea what was going on.

Your business runs on data. Shouldn’t it run on a network built for it?
OpenCape’s Enterprise Fiber gives you ultra-fast symmetrical speeds, dedicated secure connectivity, and a local team that’s invested in your success — not a distant provider reading from a script.
We already power many of Cape Cod’s core organizations. Let’s talk about how we can do the same for yours.

So I ordered fiber internet at my new location. No idea when it's going to be installed. The fiber is already laid in the street (November 2025) but the house or the appartment I live in hasn't been connected yet.
Follow me if you wanna know how long it takes to get a fiber internet at home (FTTH) in Germany and one of the most densely populated areas in Germany.

FIBER FRIDAY
Over time, the zip ties that secure aerial fiber loops can wear down. When that happens, slack loops may sag into sidewalks or roadways—creating a safety risk for pedestrians, vehicles, and the fiber itself. Our team is constantly out in the field spotting these issues early and coordinating repairs before they become a problem. It’s one of the many behind-the-scenes ways we keep the network safe, reliable, and ready to perform. 🧰🌐

State announces trimmed-down fiber internet expansion
As of June of this year, Louisiana was one of three states that had already awarded grants for deployment of BEAD, the federal government’s broadband internet deployment program.
Known in the state as GUMBO 2.0, the federal grants were the state’s second wave of fiber internet deployment, set to connect the parts of the state missed by the first round of GUMBO program funding.
However, after months of waiting, the federal government declared all states had to re-award the programs, starting a new 60-day consideration process, in which the state would consider cheaper satellite offers along with fiber cables, including from Elon Musk’s Space X.
Published:June 169:52 am Trump admin halts fiber internet expansion in LouisianaLouisiana was the first state in the nation to have its plans for fiber expansion approved by the feds as part of a Biden era grant program. Now, that approval has been revoked by Trump’s secretary of commerce.
Now that process is nearly wrapped, and the new program is looking to spend $250 million less on internet deployment, with more than $7.5 million awarded to Space X.
While the original GUMBO 2.0 was set to cover 140,000 locations, including many of the state’s most remote areas, the newly drafted proposal is set to cover 13,000 fewer locations, with others still to receive coverage, but from less reliable satellite internet.
The majority of the new internet deployments now mapped at Connect LA are scheduled for completion by 2030 and over three-fourths were awarded to providers headquartered within the state.

Grrrrr... #Starlink tries to block #Virginia’s plan to bring #FiberInternet to residents
#SpaceX wants more money, asks Trump admin to reject state's #broadband grant plan.
Jon Brodkin – Aug 14, 2025
"Starlink operator SpaceX is fighting Virginia's plan to deploy fiber Internet service to residents, claiming that federal grant money should be given to Starlink instead. SpaceX is already in line to win over $3 million in grant money in the state but is seeking $60 million.
"Starlink is poised to benefit from the Trump administration rewriting rules for the $42 billion #Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (#BEAD) grant program. While the Biden administration decided that states should prioritize #fiber in order to build more #FutureProof networks, the Trump administration ordered states to revise their plans with a 'tech-neutral approach' and lower the average cost of serving each location."

I grew up dirt poor, but I also grew up where the Internet started, and the 1st ISP went live (Massachusetts, USA). Despite the Internet starting here, our infrastructure sucks.
We were still using Dial-up when people were bragging about T1 and T3 lines (which we never saw), and it took decades before DSL came here, and decades more before Cable Internet came here. I am 44 years old, and finally, Fiber Optic Internet is at last available. It also took that long for us to have choices, because the ISPs act like oligopolies - They're like monopolies, only legal, agreeing not to compete and keeping their prices nearly identical.
I am no longer that dirt poor child, and things are generally better now.
But the one thing I knew, growing up poor, was how important Internet access was. How the difference between the house across the street and yours, meant you had affordable Internet, or not, despite living in the same town and using the same ISP.
Because American ISPs will price by zone (not just town), and that is why often the cable company will not quote you a price until you enter your address. The wealthier neighborhoods could oddly get affordable Internet, while the poorer communities, were likely quoted sometimes double the price. So when "Little Adam" or "Little Sarah" needed to do their homework, their income may have played a role twice as much.
Today, you need Internet access to live. - That is not a metaphor or an overexaggerated statement. You want a job? The application is online. Even the small, local "Mom and Pop" type businesses, have moved online. You want to pay your bills? That is online too, and if you do not have internet, it will cost you more to pay your bill by the phone or by mail (many places charged you a "convince fee" for sending a check, or speaking to someone). You want to better communicate with your doctor, that is online too. You need something from your healthcare provider, it is going to be online. People need the Internet for a lot more than posting cute cat videos, today!
The big problem with America's Internet is our ISPs seldom invest in their infrastructure, while also segregating communities, and making it harder for people to, just, live. They have been doing it for years (decades). And now, when they finally are forced to make things fairer, they want to cry foul.
I have lived outside the United States of America. It is not like this. And when ISPs say they're unable to make a profit, I cannot help but think, what they really mean, is they can no longer conduct segregation and class warfare on people.

2 of 2 - Pervious post was Ethernet, this is Wi-Fi.
GoNetspeed gave me a Nokia Beacon 10 router, which is Wi-Fi 6E. My wireless network card is made by TP-Link, and Windows reports it as an Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX200 160Mhz.
Oddly, when connected to Wi-Fi, my speed test suggests my upload is faster than my download. The only happens with the Wi-Fi (see previous post). 🤔

Go Net Speed (GoNetSpeed), speed test.
I am paying for the 2 Gbps and this is directly connected via Ethernet. Clearly, I am going to need to buy a 2.5 (or more) network card.

You are the cable / fiber internet installer, and you are asked to use the pre-existing drill holes. How do you feel?
All these wholes were previously made and used by Charter Spectrum cable in the past. The outside hole goes into the basement, and the inside hole comes up from the basement into the living room.

I see Google Fiber now offers a fiber plan labeled as "8 gigabits per second".
What in the world would someone need that much bandwidth for? I get that having super-fast internet speeds means things like cloud storage is more useful, reducing the need for local storage, but what kind of use case would have 8 Gbps be significantly better than their lowest speed, 1 Gbps?
Their example is a 4k movie would take 2.4 minutes at 1 Gbps, which seems more than adequate to me.

@edgren
Actually, it's a 200Mbps plan. 😁It was between 100~200 last night when I tested the speed while outside my room.
It's weird that whenever I'm in my room, with a full #WiFi signal*, the speed would be under 100Mbps. It shouldn't be, right? Anywayz...
No matter.
'Tis still better than before. 👍

We're getting 500x500mbps fiber service at our office tomorrow. Can't wait!
We've been slowly moving a number of cloud services back on site in preparation. No, not email. But still, a number of low bandwidth systems we paid significant $$$ to host in the cloud.
We're 💯 ready to have a hybrid setup that makes sense

I have some networking questions but am totally out of my depth on this as I don't even know the terms to look for.
I have an ISP provided fiber box that acts as a router and WIFI endpoint and a separate #opnsense machine I'd like to continue using as my #router/#firewall/#DHCP server. It was previously configured for a cable modem so I'd plug the modem into the port I'd designated as WAN and everything would route properly.
I would like a similar setup: the ISP box handles the fiber (and maybe the WiFi if it can be done, but I do have a separate wifi AP) and the opnsense box handles everything else. I can disable DHCP on the ISP box no problem and enable it on my opnsense box and plug it into the WAN port, but then I'm totally unsure of what I'm even trying to do, routing/iptables/LAN wise in order to route traffic appropriately to the LAN portion of the network.
I suspect I absolutely cannot use the WIFI on the ISP box, which, again, is fine; it'd be nice but I imagine that would introduce a level of complexity no one is here for (clients would be connecting to what is currently designated as the WAN? I'd probably need some VLAN stuff maybe if it's even doable?)
Anyone have any idea what the appropriate terms are to even search for?

After watching VM backup jobs take many hours for years, because even cable ISPs throttle to 10-15mbps. Client just upgraded to fiber and it's glorious. #FiberInternet #Lumos #Backups #SysAdmin #MSP

At home I have a 1/0.2G FTTH fiber Internet connection by Vodafone Italy.
I replaced the old Vodafone Station Revolution router with a Vodafone Wi-Fi 6 Station and this is the performance I get over Wi-Fi on my Pixel 7 Pro phone (Google speed test), and my i7 ASUS Chromebox 3 wired to the router via Ethernet (Ookla test).
The old router yelded up to 2-300Mdown on the phone and 30-50Mdown lower than the test on the Chromebox.

We are (hopefully) just a couple weeks away from closing on a home which has #fiber internet as an option. I’ve had dial-up, cable, DSL, fixed 4g/5g and even WiMAX but this will be my first #FiberInternet and I’m wondering - do we really need to use their WiFi box? Will there be some sort of terminal I can plug into the WAN port of any old router I want to use (hopefully without double NATing)? Both #RelianceConnects and #TDS are available to us.
