  1. And the new ISP is up! We switched from #Centurylink to #QuantumFiber. No change in services really, since I already had symmetrical 1Gbps. Just lower price.

The tech swapped out the ONT for a Lumen Q1000K. After a few attempts, I was able to update my WAN config in #pfSense to get rid of the old PPPoE credentials Centurylink used. I had already looked up info about setting the Lumen device to transparent bridge mode to avoid a double NAT scenario.

  3. I don't think this is our problem, but #LumenTech admitting that their network just can't cope with MAC addresses that start with a 4 or 6 is one of the most unhinged things I have ever heard.

  5. Downloaded #PingPlotter to monitor what is happening with my #ATT / #QuantumFiber / #CenturyLink fiber service, and wow, is #LumenTech (the part of CenturyLink that didn't go to AT&T) really losing 85-90% of packets between Portland and Seattle?

  7. After CenturyLink/QuantumFiber/AT&T replaced our fiber terminal, and I replaced our wi-fi router, things seem to have gotten a bit more stable.

However, we are still having these occasional slowdowns for around 30 seconds, where everything becomes choppy and latency jumps up.

I just captured one that lasted 36 seconds, so I know I am not imagining it. I just wish the fiber company had any idea what was going on.

  9. #AT&T bought #Quantum

Quantum was #CenturyLink 's creation to dodge union contracts AND FCC tariffs.

Rather than build their own, the Death Star just bought one already doing it.

  11. Anyone who had #CenturyLink fiber should be careful when contacting #QuantumFiber tech support.

I've been having daily 30 second connection issues for over a year now, so I finally got fed up and contacted support. However, that caused them to migrate my account somehow, and now I have no internet at all, and it might not come back for 48 hours.

My wife is not exactly happy with me right now.

  13. If fiber can deliver over 100Mbs to my house, how is it taking the modem over 10 minutes to connect to the Internet?

  15. Got my laptop plugged directly into the ONT, doing PPPoE on VLAN 201. It logs in and gets the right IP address, but the netmask is /32 instead of /28, and everything is still redirected to the #CenturyLink "give us money" page, even though it shows my balance as $0.
CenturyLink never did tell me exactly which century they were going to link me to.
They (Lumen) have a deal pending to sell their Quantum "consumer fiber" business to AT&T, but that won't close until some time next year.

  17. The Register: Major telecom supplier compromised by unnamed nation-state attackers. “Nation-state snoops broke into Ribbon Communications – an outfit that provides software and networking gear to Verizon, CenturyLink, and the US Defense Department – last December, remained hidden for about nine months, and stole files belonging to three customers, according to the US telecommunications firm.”

  18. It appears that #CenturyLink has resolved their problems in the last 20 minutes or so. All the other devices on my network are now functioning. While it's up, I'll probably configure at least one other computer on my network to use the Google Public DNS.

  20. My #CenturyLink DSL Internet is down... except for one computer where I'd previously configured DNS to use Google's Public DNS. I'm assuming this is somehow key to why it still works. I've tried to reproduce this onto another computer, but no luck so far.

  22. Second hour+ #Centurylink outage in the last day.

I just found out that AT&T bought CenturyLink residential fiber in my area. I wonder if this is a signifier of what is to come.

I've had CenturyLink fiber for over 6 years now and things have pretty much been totally okay the whole time, so not excited about what this could mean.

  24. Credit where it's due, #Quantum made the switch from #CenturyLink seamless. The new ONT is much smaller/nicer, too.

And you can't argue with these results...

  26. @aldarch3 I wouldn't even know what to look for just watching the fire hose.

I did use tcpdump to see if there were a bunch of resets or other shenanigans -- nothing jumped out.

I even went tin-foil-hat and thought #CenturyLink was traffic shaping or something, but setting up my own OpenVPN server on TCP port 443, on an EC2 instance, then running 'apt update && apt full-upgrade' is just killing this box.

It's gotta be a bad NIC, or a bug somewhere the OS...

  27. Just spent an hour on the phone with #CenturyLink while they told me repeatedly that they “will not honor price for life” as advertised and offered to me when I signed up. So that’s fun. Gotta love bait-and-switch advertising.

    That's certainly reassuring.

  32. Chinese government #hackers penetrated the networks of several large US-based Internet service providers
and may have gained access to systems used for court-authorized #wiretaps of communications networks,
The Wall Street Journal reported Saturday.

"People familiar with the matter" told the WSJ that hackers breached the networks of companies including #Verizon, #ATandT, and Lumen (also known as #CenturyLink).

"A cyberattack tied to the Chinese government penetrated the networks of a swath of US broadband providers,
potentially accessing information from systems the federal government uses for court-authorized network wiretapping requests," the WSJ wrote.

"For months or longer, the hackers might have held access to network infrastructure used to cooperate with lawful US requests for communications data, according to people familiar with the matter."

These "attackers also had access to other tranches of more generic Internet traffic," according to the WSJ's sources.

The attack is being attributed to a Chinese hacking group called #SaltTyphoon.

When you say vote harder, I can’t tell if you’re joking about the relative uselessness of a voting in elections, or if you mean vote in every way. I.e. boycotts.

I’m a hard voter myself. I do the near minimalist lifestyle of not buying a lot of shit (as I write this post from a 16 year old laptop). Just about every market decision is me voting harder by buying 2nd hand and boycotting countless brands that are either directly tied to environmental harm or tied to financing right wing politicians. E.g. I boycott all ALEC members (e.g. #FedEx, #AmEx, #AnheuserBusch, #Boeing, #CenturyLink, #Chevron, #Marlboro, #Motorola, #Sony), boycott #Amazon, etc.
