  1. @samuelpepys "Ashamed"? Really? 🙄 The only thing to be ashamed of here is that our writing system is so divorced from the language, yet we blame the people and not the broken system! #EnglishSpellingReform #EnglishSpellingReformNow

  6. So, most varieties of English have around 40 distinctive sounds (phonemes). That is substantially more than the number of letters we typically use. So, new poll: if you were to design a spelling reform, how would you deal with that difference? #EnglishSpellingReform

I've probably said it here before, but we should really resume using the letter "Ðð" in English!

  16. Just saw this awesome video, promoting runes as a better writing system for English than the Latin alphabet:

    youtu.be/4npuVmGxXuk?si=q52HLJ

    He makes some good points.

    ᚪᛁ ᚦᛁᛝᚳ ᛁᛏ ᚳᚢᛞ ᚹᚱᚳ!

What do you think, @shavian @rthvizqtr, or anyone else?

  21. @shplink I'm working on an English spelling reform proposal. I was tempted to use "ʌ" for the vowel in "cup". But the most graphically obvious way to capitalize it would be "Λ" - which both my Greek colleague and my own hellenophilic tendencies rebel against.

I think I'll go with "ə". Which I gather is capitalized differently depending on the language that uses it: either "Ə" or "Ǝ".

Only one language currently uses the letter "ð", that I know of. English used to have it, and if it were up to me, we'd pick it up again! None of this "th" for two different sounds ‐ go back to using "ð" for "this" and "þ" for "theme"!
